The History of Vitamin Discovery: Part 7
By the early 1930s, scientists had realized that what was once considered a single "vitamin B" was actually a collection of different nutrients.
In 1933, researchers isolated and purified riboflavin, now known as Vitamin B2.

Riboflavin is essential for normal energy metabolism. It helps the body process carbohydrates, fats, and proteins and is involved in cellular reactions that help convert nutrients into usable energy.

The discovery of B2 was another step toward understanding that vitamins aren't simply one large category of nutrients. Each has its own functions, pathways, and role in keeping the body operating normally.

And the vitamin B story was far from finished. Scientists would continue identifying additional members of the B-vitamin family throughout the following years.

Stay tuned for Part 8: Vitamin B6 and another piece of the energy and metabolism puzzle.

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies worldwide, yet it often goes undetected long before anemia appears.

Many people experience symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, headaches, restless legs, brittle nails, hair loss, or poor exercise tolerance while their hemoglobin is still considered "normal."

Current clinical guidance recognizes that iron deficiency exists on a spectrum. Looking beyond a standard CBC and evaluating markers like ferritin, transferrin saturation (TSAT), and the patient's symptoms can provide a more complete picture.

If iron deficiency is confirmed, treatment should also address why it developed.

Common contributors include:
• Heavy menstrual bleeding
• Pregnancy or rapid growth
• Low dietary iron intake
• Poor absorption from digestive conditions or certain medications
• Chronic blood loss

Recent research has also changed how oral iron is often prescribed.

For many patients, alternate-day morning dosing may improve absorption and reduce gastrointestinal side effects compared with multiple daily doses.

Taking iron with vitamin C may further enhance absorption, while coffee, tea, calcium, and some medications can decrease it.

Not everyone with fatigue has iron deficiency, and not everyone with iron deficiency requires the same treatment. Proper testing and individualized care are essential.

Always speak with your healthcare provider before starting iron supplements, as excess iron can also be harmful.

The History of Vitamin Discovery: Part 6
In 1929, biochemist Henrik Dam made an unexpected discovery while studying cholesterol metabolism in chickens. Some of the animals developed excessive bleeding, even after minor injuries.

The cause wasn't cholesterol at all—it was the absence of a previously unknown nutrient that the body needed for normal blood clotting.
Dam named it Vitamin K, derived from the German word "Koagulation," meaning clotting.
Today, Vitamin K is recognized for much more than its role in blood clotting. It also contributes to bone health by helping regulate how calcium is used throughout the body, highlighting the interconnected nature of nutrition and overall wellness.

The discovery of Vitamin K reminded scientists that vitamins don't work in isolation. Each nutrient plays a unique role in supporting the body's complex systems.

Next in the series: Part 7 explores Vitamin B₂ (Riboflavin) and how it helped scientists better understand cellular energy production.

Research into red and near-infrared light therapy continues to expand, including studies exploring its effects on chronic kidney disease.

One area of interest is renal fibrosis, a process in which excessive scar tissue develops in the kidneys over time. Early preclinical research suggests photobiomodulation may help influence cellular pathways involved in inflammation, oxidative stress, and tissue remodeling.

Scientists believe many of these effects begin in the mitochondria, where light helps support ATP production, providing cells with the energy needed for normal repair and maintenance.

While these findings are encouraging, red and near-infrared light therapy is not a treatment or cure for chronic kidney disease, and more human research is needed to determine its clinical role.

As always, light therapy should be viewed as one piece of a comprehensive wellness plan developed with your healthcare team.

The History of Vitamin Discovery: Part 5
In 1922, researchers Herbert Evans and Katharine Bishop identified what would become known as Vitamin E while studying nutrition and reproduction in laboratory animals.

Their work showed that another essential nutrient was required for normal physiological function, expanding the growing list of vitamins necessary for human health.

Today, Vitamin E is best known as a powerful antioxidant. It helps protect cells from oxidative stress caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals.

Vitamin E also contributes to normal immune function and supports healthy skin and tissues.

The discovery of Vitamin E reminded scientists that nutrition is about more than preventing deficiency diseases. It is about providing the body with the nutrients it needs to maintain normal function throughout life.

As our understanding of nutrition continues to grow, these early discoveries remain the foundation of modern preventive and integrative medicine.

Next in the series: Part 6 explores Vitamin K, the vitamin that transformed our understanding of blood clotting and bone health.

Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation can lead to difficult side effects that affect comfort and quality of life.

Photobiomodulation, also known as red and near-infrared light therapy, has been studied as a supportive therapy for managing some of these treatment-related side effects. Research has shown promising results, particularly for reducing the severity of oral mucositis, a common and painful complication of cancer treatment.

By supporting mitochondrial function and cellular energy (ATP) production, red and near-infrared light therapy may help promote tissue repair and support the body's natural healing processes.

While light therapy is not a treatment for cancer itself, it may serve as a complementary therapy when used under the guidance of a healthcare team.

At The Naturopathic Collective, we believe in sharing evidence-informed therapies that may help improve comfort and quality of life throughout the healing journey.

Always consult your oncology team before beginning any supportive therapy during cancer treatment.
