Did you know that icy sidewalks, unlit entryways, and hidden black ice make falling one of the most common winter hazards in Alaska for people of all ages?
In honor of Falls Prevention Awareness Week, we want to remind our community that slipping on ice is NOT just an inevitable part of living up north—it is largely preventable!
Whether you're navigating slick parking lots, shoveling the driveway, or walking the dog on frozen trails, having strong balance, quick reaction time, and proper winter habits keeps you safe and steady all season long.
❄️ 4 Quick Alaskan Winter Safety Checks:
-Adopt the "Penguin Walk": Take short, slow steps, keep your center of gravity forward, and keep hands out of pockets for balance.
-Gear Up: Wear boots with deep traction, or slide on ice cleats (YakTrax/MICROspikes) before stepping onto icy pavement.
-Scan for Black Ice: Treat shaded steps and parking areas as slippery, even if they look dry.
-Train Your Balance: Targeted physical therapy strengthens your core, improves joint stability, and sharpens your body's natural balance reactions.
At Advanced Physical Therapy, our specialized balance and stability programs are designed to help you navigate Alaska’s winter with total confidence.
