School teams work incredibly hard to support our kids, but because they are often bound by strict internal criteria and tight timelines, sometimes a school evaluation can still leave you with a lingering questions about your child's need for services. If you are looking for a bit more data to help guide the team forward, you have a wonderful option.

Under federal law (IDEA), parents have the right to request an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) at public expense, if they've already been tested by the school district. This allows an outside professional to partner with you and the school by providing a fresh set of eyes—and the school district covers the cost.

(Note: Not all students need a full IEE to get the right support; sometimes a simple short-term parent consultation or private therapy is exactly what’s required to map out next steps).

Why seek an IEE with us?

📊 Comprehensive Testing: We offer both psychological and educational testing to provide an unbiased, deep-dive look into your student's unique strengths, needs, and learning profile (including ADHD, dyslexia, autism, anxiety, or depression).

🏫 A Trusted School Partner: Trained as school psychologists, our clinicians understand the system inside and out. We speak the complicated "language" of the schools, and all those acronyms! We are proud to be on the approved independent evaluator referral lists for most Northern Virginia school districts, and have received positive feedback about our evaluations.

While school teams ultimately make the final decisions regarding eligibility, services, and accommodations, our goal is to provide the objective data and in-depth analysis that helps everyone at the table confidently build the best possible path forward for your child.

We are proud to be licensed for private practice by the Board of Health Professions, ensuring your family receives the highest standard of qualified, ethical care.

📲 Have an upcoming school meeting or questions about how an IEE can help? Reach out to talk to a psychologist directly. Give us a call or send an email, and we’ll connect to see how we can best support your family's team!

Is your early reader struggling to keep up? 📚

Learning to read is one of the most complex tasks a young brain undertakes. If your Kindergartner or 1st Grader is struggling with letter sounds, rhyming, or recognizing common words, it might be time for a closer look.

We offering Dyslexia Screening specifically for early elementary students.

What you should know:

✨Proactive, Not Diagnostic: These are not full diagnostic evaluations. Instead, they are targeted "risk assessments" designed to catch red flags early.

✨Identify the "Breakdown": We pinpoint exactly where the reading process is stalling. Or we may give you the peace of mind that your child is on track with literacy, and what to monitor

✨A Roadmap for Success: You’ll walk away with clear, evidence-based recommendations for intervention and monitoring to share with teachers or use at home.

Early identification is the best way to protect a child’s self-esteem and prevent long-term academic frustration. 💡

The preschool years are a season of incredible transformation. But for many parents, it’s also a time of "quiet wondering."

You might notice your child struggling to keep up with peers during play, or perhaps their teacher has mentioned they have a hard time sitting for circle time. Maybe those "big behaviors" at home are starting to feel like more than just a phase.

At Counseling and Assessment Practice of Fairfax, we specialize in providing the clarity you need. Our developmental evaluations for ages 3–5 aren’t "tests" in a cold office—they are a comprehensive look at the "whole child."

What makes our process different?
🏫 We go where they are. We include a classroom or daycare observation to see how your child interacts and learns in their natural environment.
🧩 Play-based testing. Our office sessions are low-pressure and designed to feel like play, allowing us to see your child's true strengths and challenges.
🗺️ A Roadmap, not just a label. We help you understand how your child interacts, communicates, and learns, providing you with a personalized plan for school and home.

Whether you are looking for answers regarding Autism, developmental delays, or just want to ensure they have the right support before Kindergarten, we are here to help.

Let’s talk through it together. We offer a free phone consultation with a psychologist to help you decide if an evaluation is the right next step.
