We are committed to providing transformative services to individuals, couples and families whose lives are impacted by unplanned pregnancy, parenting in a crisis situation and/or whose lives have been touched by adoption.

Our team left the National Council For Adoption NCFA Conference this summer feeling challenged in how we prepare and support our families adopting from foster care 🏡

As part of preparing for adoptive placements, we are creating timelines for each child, showing length of time with their primary caregivers, entering care, placement history, separation from siblings, and significant life events đź“Ť

Our goal is that adoptive parents would use this tool to continually remember their child’s story did not start when they walked through their doors. It will take consistency, compassion, and commitment to journey with a child towards healing in your forever family. A journey that is often more difficult than expected, but a journey that is always worth it 🤍

Their stories don’t start when their adoption does and it doesn’t end at finalization. Adoption is a lifelong journey.

Adult adoptee voices have helped us learn that honesty and openness with adopted children is vital to developing a healthy identity and safe relationships with adoptive parents.

Just because a child isn’t asking questions, doesn’t mean they’re not curious about their story.

Children should hear about their adoption story from their parents. Telling them young and often allows for parents to be formative in their child’s understanding of their adoption.

This can look like -

👉 “we are so happy we adopted you and that we are family”

👉 “there are two ways families are formed - one is through birth and the other is through adoption”

👉 “you grew in your birth mother’s tummy and then we adopted you. We are so happy that you are our son/daughter”

Even at a young age, children will feel the warmth, love, and openness around the word “adoption” from their parents.

When we begin to see our child’s behavior as communication, our response and our approach begins to shift. This is the foundation of brain-based parenting!

While this approach is helpful for all parents, it is essential for caregivers of children who have experienced trauma. The impact of trauma on a child’s developing brain cannot be underestimated. But seeing your child’s behavior as starting in their brain can foster compassion and direction for how to help them develop skills towards more effective and healthy behavior.
