๐ข Medicaid Update: New Federal Work Requirement Coming in 2027
Starting January 2027, adults enrolled in Medicaid Expansion in Virginia will be required to work, volunteer, attend school, or participate in a training program for at least 80 hours a month to keep their coverage โ unless they qualify for an exemption.
Coverage reviews will also move from once a year to every 6 months for this group.
Who does this apply to?
Only adults ages 19โ64 enrolled in Medicaid Expansion (income under 138% FPL, not eligible for Medicare).
โ This does NOT apply to children, pregnant/postpartum individuals, adults with a disability, or adults 65+.
Who is exempt?
โ๏ธ Individuals with a disability or blindness (including SSI/SSDI recipients)
โ๏ธ Pregnant individuals or those within 12 months postpartum
โ๏ธ Former foster youth (25 or younger)
โ๏ธ Parents/caregivers of a child 13 or younger, or caregivers of someone with a disability
โ๏ธ Veterans with a 100% disability rating
โ๏ธ Members of federally recognized tribes
โ๏ธ Individuals with a serious/complex medical, behavioral health, or developmental condition that significantly limits daily activities
โ๏ธ Individuals incarcerated or released within the last 3 months

Medicaid Expansion members will receive a notice by end of September 2026. You can also call Cover Virginia at 855-242-8282 or contact your local Department of Social Services.
