August is National Immunization Awareness Month. πŸ’‰

Here's the part people underestimate: the hard part of immunisation isn't the vaccine. It's everything around it.

Keeping it cold on a road that isn't a road. Finding the child again for the second dose. Records that survive a camp, a move, a monsoon.

Where health systems are strong, vaccination feels routine. Where they're weak β€” in displacement camps, in rural districts β€” routine is exactly what's missing, and preventable disease walks straight back in.

Routine care is not boring. In the places we work, it's the whole fight.

It's International Youth Day.

Every mission team we send has someone on it who's early in their career β€” a resident, a student, someone doing this for the first time and finding out what they're capable of.

That isn't sentimental. It's succession planning. The physicians who founded IMANA in 1967 were once the young ones too.

We run a Students & Residents committee, a mentorship programme, and annual scholarships for students in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry and allied health β€” because a career in this field is hard to navigate alone, and harder to fund.

If you're a student wondering whether there's a place for you in this work: there is, and we'd like to hear from you.

August is National Eye Exam Month and Children's Eye Health & Safety Month β€” a good moment to talk about one of the quietest injustices in global health.

Cataract surgery is among the most cost-effective operations in all of medicine. It is also, for millions of people, completely out of reach.

So someone stops working. Stops cooking. Stops recognising faces. A child is pulled out of school to guide a grandparent. One untreated condition reorganises an entire household.

IMANA runs free cataract surgeries in remote parts of Bangladesh with local partners, and since 2017 has worked with an ophthalmology team across Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir β€” free eye exams, cataract surgery, minor procedures.

The operation is short. The wait is the tragedy.

In the autumn of 1967, at a student association meeting in Columbus, Ohio, a few Muslim physicians decided their profession needed something that didn't exist yet.

Dr. Mobin Akhtar. Dr. Amjad Ali. A handful of others. No offices, no funding, no missions.

What they had was an idea: that Muslim healthcare professionals in North America needed a forum β€” and that the same group should be doing humanitarian relief. That second part was there from the very beginning.

Fifty-nine years later, that's still the arrangement. A professional association that also shows up in Aden, Cox's Bazar, Amman, and Gaza.

Everything since has been built on a conversation at a student meeting.

Summer temperatures can increase the risk of dehydration and heat-related illness. Stay hydrated, limit prolonged sun exposure, and check in on vulnerable family members.

Behind every mission statistic is a person whose life has been changed through access to healthcare.

Moments like this one remind us why service matters and why every single patient deserves compassionate, quality care.

Nelson Mandela once said, "What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived."

Today, we honor his legacy by recognizing those who dedicate their lives to serving others. Through healthcare and humanitarian relief, IMANA volunteers continue that spirit of service every day.
