Understanding the Eligibility Requirements

Navigating services for individuals with developmental disabilities can feel overwhelming. Understanding New Jersey's Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) eligibility requirements is an important first step toward accessing valuable support.

Who May Qualify?

To receive DDD-funded services, individuals generally must:
▪️ Be 21 years of age or older and reside in New Jersey.
▪️ Have a developmental disability that began before age 22.
▪️ Have a condition expected to be lifelong.
▪️ Experience substantial limitations in at least three areas of daily functioning, such as communication, learning, self-care, mobility, or independent living.
▪️ Be eligible for or enrolled in Medicaid.

Did You Know?

Individuals can begin applying for DDD eligibility as early as age 18, helping families prepare for the transition to adult services.

When Small Changes Start Telling a Bigger Story 🏡

Sometimes the signs that a loved one needs more support are not dramatic. They show up gradually, through small changes in routines, habits, mobility, or independence.

Notice the signs early.

Have you noticed:
✓ Missed or forgotten medications?
✓ Unexplained weight loss or changes in appetite?
✓ A recent fall, new bruising, or increased unsteadiness?
✓ Difficulty keeping the home clean or organized?
✓ Less interest in seeing friends or participating in activities they once enjoyed?
✓ Difficulty with everyday tasks such as getting dressed, preparing meals, or managing personal care?

One change may not mean that help is needed. But when several changes begin appearing together, it may be time to start a conversation.
