Pluto the Planet/Cosmic Destroyer: In astrology and space mythology, Pluto is known as the ruler of the underworld and a planet of deep, sometimes ruthless, transformation and rebirth.

True resilience is not a corporate buzzword; it is a hard-won baseline for survival."
A huge thank you to the Bay Area Reporter for giving me the platform to share my latest guest opinion piece, "The Currency of Resilience: Transforming Q***r Advocacy into Economic Visibility."
In this article, I dive deep into the realities facing LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, and creatives today—specifically the systemic underfunding and acute burnout that so often forces our community leaders to run on empty. I propose a "dual-engine architecture" that balances community-anchored media visibility with an unyielding commitment to personal, whole-person wellness. If we want self-sustaining, resilient neighborhood economies, we have to protect the human beings driving them.
Thank you to everyone who has already reached out, read, and shared. Our economic visibility and our well-being must go hand-in-hand if we want to build a truly sustainable future.
If you haven't had a chance to read it yet, you can check it out here:

Juneteenth (a blending of "June" and "nineteenth") commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation—more than two years after President Lincoln initially issued it.

Shaun Hassan Haines is a prominent San Francisco native, community organizer, social justice leader, and IT professional who has spent years building coalitions at the intersection of Black and LGBTQ+ activism in the city.
His background directly connects to the specific organizations and initiatives you mentioned:
1. San Francisco Black Community Matters & Black Lives Matter SF
Haines is the Founder of San Francisco Black Community Matters and has served as an Associate Member of the San Francisco Democratic Party (serving on the Democratic County Central Committee for seven years). Through this work and his broader activism, he has been heavily involved in policy work benefiting the Black community, fighting systemic racism, tackling local economic hardships, and supporting grassroots movements like Black Lives Matter. He has frequently advocated for police reform, justice system accountability, and addressing implicit/explicit biases in law enforcement.
2. Black Brothers Esteem (BBE)
Haines has a long-standing history with Black Brothers Esteem (BBE), a program of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. He has been an active member for several years, largely driven by his work co-collaborating on the Generations Black LGBT History Month events. His efforts to promote political and social awareness, organize health campaigns, and assist with HIV testing/prevention earned him BBE's Nia Award.
3. Black Voices and Allies Leadership Committee
Haines has served as the former Chairman of the Black Voices and Allies Leadership Committee. In this role and others, he has focused on elevating Black representation in local politics and creating space for community forums to turn dialogue into legislative and social action.
4. The Bayard Rustin Coalition (BRC)
Reflecting his deep roots in the Black LGBTQ+ community, Haines has served as a Project Manager for Organizational Development with the Bayard Rustin Coalition (BRC). The BRC focuses on amplifying the voices of Black LGBTQ+ individuals, a mission that aligns with Haines' other high-profile roles, such as serving on the Board of Directors for San Francisco Pride and the Alice B. Toklas LGBTQ Democratic Club.
5. Other Civic & Local Leadership
Beyond the NAACP and local civil rights networks, Haines’ background includes significant public service appointments and professional work:
City Commission: He serves as a commissioner on the Our City Our Home Oversight Committee, which focuses on homelessness and housing solutions in San Francisco.
Law Enforcement Advisory: He is a former member of the San Francisco Police Chief's LGBT Advisory Forum.

Juneteenth (a blending of "June" and "nineteenth") commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation—more than two years after President Lincoln initially issued it.

Why is it celebrated?

Although the Emancipation Proclamation declared all enslaved people in Confederate states free on January 1, 1863, it was essentially unenforceable in areas without a strong Union military presence. Because the Civil War bypassed much of Texas, enslavers fled there with enslaved workers to avoid Union control.

When someone has been conditioned to always put others first—often due to people-pleasing tendencies, past trauma, or societal expectations—they view self-sacrifice as the only valid way to exist. To them, neglecting their own needs is safety and love.
Because that is their blueprint, they lack the framework to understand healthy boundaries. When they see someone else "choosing themselves," it doesn't look like self-care or self-respect to them. Instead, they misinterpret it through a few different lenses:
They see it as selfishness: Because they equate ignoring their own needs with being "good," anyone who honors their own needs must be "bad" or self-absorbed.
They see it as a threat: A person with boundaries can't be easily manipulated or managed. This unpredictability makes the unhealed person deeply uncomfortable.
They feel a subconscious envy: Seeing someone else choose themselves holds up a mirror to the choices they aren't making. The confusion is often a defense mechanism to protect them from facing their own self-abandonment.
Ultimately, it’s like trying to read a language you’ve never been taught. Until a person learns how to value and choose themselves, someone else's healthy boundaries will always look like hostility.

Screw a LOL

No one tells you that after healing deep trauma. You remember how to giggle. How many years have you gone without real laughter?

When you're doing the heavy lifting of healing, you're so focused on just trying to breathe, survive, and stop the hurting. You brace yourself for the tears and the hard conversations.

But no one warns you about the moment the fog clears, and suddenly, this pure, bubbly, uninhibited kid-like giggle just erupts out of you. It’s like discovering a room in your own house you forgot existed. It feels light, it feels safe, and it feels entirely yours.

Hold onto that feeling. You earned every single bit of that giggle.
