Many parents notice that “not listening” or difficulty following directions isn’t about willful behavior, but about how a child processes information, attention, and expectations in the moment.

This can be especially true when instructions are given quickly, contain multiple steps, or happen during transitions, busy environments, or times of stress.

In ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis), we look at what’s happening before, during, and after these moments to better understand what might be getting in the way. For some children, it may be that directions are too complex and need to be broken down into smaller, more manageable steps. For others, it may be helpful to teach foundational skills like attending, responding to name, or waiting before instructions are given.

South Jordan, Utah ABA pediatric therapists often use clear, consistent language paired with visual supports, modeling, and positive reinforcement to help children build success over time.

Practicing in calm, structured settings first, and then gradually moving into more natural environments, can make it easier for children to generalize these skills into everyday routines like getting ready for school, cleaning up, or participating in group activities.

It’s also important to remember that listening is a skill, not an expectation children automatically know how to meet.

With the right support, many children are able to build confidence, reduce frustration, and experience more success following directions across home, school, and community settings.

If you’re feeling unsure about what’s typical or wondering whether support could help, you don’t have to figure it out alone, there are ways to better understand what your child needs and how to support them effectively.

Summer is here, and while it brings plenty of opportunities for fun, it can also mean changes in routine, increased stimulation, and fewer structured activities. For children with sensory needs, this can sometimes lead to dysregulation, overwhelm, or difficulty transitioning throughout the day.

The good news is that many favorite summer activities naturally support sensory development. Swimming, playing at the park, riding bikes, jumping on a trampoline, digging in sand, gardening, water play, and nature walks can all provide valuable sensory input while helping children stay active and engaged.

Sensory-friendly activities don’t have to be complicated. Creating obstacle courses, using sidewalk chalk, playing with bubbles, or setting up a simple water table can provide opportunities for movement, exploration, and regulation. Every child is different, so finding activities that match your child’s unique sensory preferences is key.

South Jordan, Utah parents - if your child frequently struggles with sensory sensitivities, emotional regulation, or transitions during the summer months, Occupational Therapy can help identify strategies that support their success at home and in the community.

Our team in South Jordan, Utah, is here to support your family, answer your questions, and help your child thrive both at home and in everyday life.

Is my child’s behavior age-appropriate, or is it something I should be concerned about?

This is one of the most common questions South Jordan parents ask, and the answer isn’t always straightforward.

While tantrums, big emotions, and challenges with listening can be part of typical development, some signs may indicate your child could benefit from additional support. Frequent meltdowns, difficulty with transitions, communication challenges, sensory sensitivities, or struggles with social interactions can all affect a child’s success at home, school, and in the community.

ABA Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy can help children build skills in communication, emotional regulation, social development, sensory processing, and independence. Early support can make a meaningful difference and help children feel more confident in everyday life.

If you’re wondering whether your child’s behavior is typical, trust your instincts. Asking questions is often the first step toward finding helpful answers.

We’re excited to share that our team in South Jordan, Utah, is now accepting new patients and are here to support your family, answer your questions, and help your child thrive both at home and in everyday life.

One of the biggest conversations happening right now in pediatric occupational therapy is around sensory processing and regulation. Some children become overwhelmed by loud environments, clothing textures, changes in routine, or busy classrooms. Others may struggle with frustration tolerance, big emotional reactions, body awareness, or staying focused long enough to complete daily activities. These challenges are more common than many parents realize.

Occupational therapy helps children build the foundational skills needed for everyday life. Through play-based, individualized support, OT can help children strengthen emotional regulation, fine motor skills, sensory processing, coordination, independence, and confidence in ways that feel achievable and supportive, not overwhelming.

If you’ve been wondering whether occupational therapy could help your child, trust that asking questions is a meaningful first step.

Our team in South Jordan, Utah and California are here to support your family, answer your questions, and help your child thrive both at home and in everyday life.

Play is often seen as something extra - something children do in between “real learning” or structured activities. But in reality, play is one of the most important ways children develop communication, emotional regulation, problem-solving, and social skills.
When children engage in play, they are constantly practicing how to navigate the world around them. Whether it’s pretend play, building, drawing, or interacting with peers, these moments are where so many foundational developmental skills begin to take shape.
In child-focused therapies like speech therapy, occupational therapy, and ABA, play isn’t just encouraged, it’s often the foundation of treatment. Through play, children are more engaged, more regulated, and more open to learning new skills in a way that feels natural and safe.

If your child learns best through movement, imagination, or hands-on interaction, play-based therapy can be a powerful way to support growth while meeting them exactly where they are.

Summer is right around the corner and can often bring a shift in routine that can be both exciting and challenging for children. Without the structure of school days, some kids thrive, while others may struggle with transitions, behavior changes, communication, or regulating big emotions in new environments.

You might notice your child having a harder time with flexibility, social interactions, or daily expectations during the summer months. These changes don’t always mean something is “wrong,” but they can highlight areas where extra support could make daily life feel more manageable.

Speech therapy, occupational therapy, and ABA can help children build skills that carry through all seasons, from communicating needs more clearly, to managing sensory input, to navigating routines and expectations with greater independence.

Whether you want to keep your child on a routine or simply ask questions about where they’re at in their development to prepare for the upcoming school year, this might be a helpful time to learn more about what support could look like for your child, not just for now, but for long-term growth.

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering whether your child is “just taking a little longer” or if they might benefit from extra support, you’re not alone. Many parents notice early differences in speech, behavior, attention, or daily routines but aren’t always sure what those signs mean or what to do next.

Development doesn’t always follow a straight path, and every child grows in their own way. But when communication, regulation, or daily living skills feel harder than expected, it can leave families feeling uncertain, frustrated, or even isolated in the process of trying to help.

Services like speech therapy, occupational therapy, and ABA are designed to meet children where they are. The goal isn’t to change who a child is, but to support their ability to communicate, participate, and navigate everyday life with greater confidence and ease.

If you’re feeling unsure about what your child needs, we’re here to help you sort through the questions and explore what support might look like for your family. Book an appointment with our team of pediatric therapists by visiting our website, link in bio.

One thing many parents don’t realize about speech delays is that they don’t always look like “not talking.”

Some children have large vocabularies and can speak clearly, but still struggle with communication in ways that are easy to overlook. They may have difficulty answering questions, telling stories in order, understanding directions, finding the right words, or keeping up with back-and-forth conversation. Others may become frustrated easily because they know what they want to say, but can’t fully express it.

Sometimes these challenges are mistaken for shyness, behavioral difficulties, inattention, or even personality traits when they may actually be connected to underlying language processing or communication difficulties.

Speech therapy is about much more than articulation. It helps children build the foundational communication skills needed for learning, social interaction, emotional expression, and confidence in everyday life.

At Proficio Therapy, we help children strengthen speech and language skills through individualized, supportive therapy designed around their unique needs. Early support can make a meaningful difference, especially when challenges are subtle and easy to miss.

We asked Michelle, who manages our partnerships, and Leanne, an ABA director, “What keeps you passionate about the work you do?”

For many of our clinicians, it’s the small, meaningful moments that stand out most. A child learning to communicate a need for the first time. A client gaining confidence during a social interaction. A breakthrough in a routine that once felt overwhelming. These moments may seem small from the outside, but they represent huge steps forward for the children and families we support.

It’s also the relationships that matter. Watching trust build over time, celebrating growth with caregivers, and being part of a child’s support system as they learn new skills creates a sense of purpose that goes far beyond any single session.

ABA therapy is structured, intentional, and data-driven, but at its heart, it’s deeply human work. It’s about helping children build skills that increase independence, communication, and confidence in everyday life.

We’re grateful for the dedication of our team and the families who trust us with their journey. If you’re looking for support, Proficio Therapy is here to help. Contact us today to book an appointment.
