Thumb sucking can contribute to an open bite (seen here in the upper photo where the front upper and lower teeth do not touch when biting down all the way). The good news is that when the habit is stopped the bite often has a chance to improve naturally.
In this case we temporarily placed an “appliance” on the roof of the mouth to break the thumb habit and simultaneously expand the upper palate. The open bite naturally corrected itself in less than a year when we eliminated the underlying problem. Our patient is now in a good position to wait for the rest of his permanent teeth to erupt!
If you’re noticing an open bite in your child or having a hard time stopping a finger or thumb habit, we’re here to help. 💛
