While genetics do play a role, the way a child breathes, chews, swallows and rests their tongue can also influence jaw and facial growth over time.

Healthy oral function supports the natural development of the face and jaws. This is why things like nasal breathing, lip seal, tongue posture and chewing strength matter so much during the early years.

The Myo Munchee is designed to build strength, tone and function in the muscles of the lips, face and tongue to support healthy oral habits, proper tongue posture and nasal breathing.

Small daily habits can help support lifelong development - make chewing on a Myo Munchee one of them!

👅🤝🦷 The real best friend duo? Your tongue & palate.

Your tongue should rest gently on the roof of your mouth—helping support breathing, sleep, jaw development, and function.

Love seeing myofunctional therapy gaining more mainstream attention 🙌

This is a great beginner-friendly article explaining what myofunctional therapy is and why it matters for breathing, sleep, oral function, and overall health.

What I especially appreciate? It was reviewed by Dr. Brandon Peters, a board-certified neurologist and sleep medicine specialist, as well as a Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Seeing more collaboration and recognition from the sleep medicine world is exciting.

Many people are surprised to learn that concerns like mouth breathing, snoring, poor sleep, tongue thrust, TMJ symptoms, and orthodontic relapse may have an underlying functional component.

Verywell Health

Myofunctional therapy exercises are movements that work the tongue muscle to strengthen the airway and relieve heartburn and obstructive sleep apnea.

👃 Why Does Nasal Breathing Matter So Much?

Your nose was designed for breathing — your mouth was designed for eating and talking.

When we breathe through our nose, it helps:

✨ Filter & humidify air
✨ Improve oxygen delivery
✨ Support better sleep quality
✨ Encourage proper jaw & facial development in kids
✨ Reduce snoring & mouth dryness
✨ Support focus, behavior, and overall function

Chronic mouth breathing can be linked to:
⚠️ Snoring
⚠️ Poor sleep quality
⚠️ Open-mouth posture
⚠️ Crowding or narrow jaws
⚠️ Dry mouth & increased cavity risk
⚠️ TMJ symptoms and tension

If your child sleeps with their mouth open, snores, drools, has dark circles, or struggles with attention — it may be worth exploring why.

For adults, mouth breathing can contribute to poor sleep, fatigue, jaw tension, and even worsen sleep apnea symptoms.

👄 Mouth closed. Tongue up. Breathe through the nose. It sounds simple, but it matters.

Sleep is when the brain consolidates memory, regulates emotion, and matures.

When sleep is disturbed by airway obstruction
those processes are compromised.

Mouth breathing and snoring
are not benign findings.
They are markers of neurodevelopmental risk.

Transformation Tuesday!! Check out this initial, start and final. Below is a patient that came to us with a maxillary expander and four brackets on the four front teeth. This is common practice at other orthodontist offices but not ours. Orthodontic treatment is like building a house — you must first create the proper foundation before focusing on the finishing details. To do that we placed Dr. Williams’ Series 2000 appliances and then worked on building the smile. And as always- NO EXTRACTIONS OF PERMANENT TEETH.
