Happy Pride Month from Balanced Learning Center 🌈

At Balanced Learning Center, we believe people should never have to leave parts of themselves at the door.

A person is not just autistic.
Or LGBTQIA+.
Or disabled.
Or a student.
Or a sibling.
Or a parent.

We are all made up of many identities, experiences, strengths, and stories.

When we say we support neurodivergent people, we also support neurodivergent people who are LGBTQIA+.

When we say we support LGBTQIA+ people, we also support those who are disabled, chronically ill, navigating mental health challenges, from diverse cultural backgrounds, and carrying all the other pieces that make them who they are.

You cannot affirm one part of a person while rejecting another.

True inclusion means embracing the whole person.

This Pride Month, we celebrate the many members of our community who live at the intersection of neurodivergence and LGBTQIA+ identity. We honor your experiences, your resilience, your joy, and your right to exist exactly as you are.

Everyone deserves spaces where they don’t have to choose which parts of themselves are welcome.

At Balanced Learning Center, all of you is welcome here. 💜

If you’ve been around awhile, you may have already realized that I’m terrible with keeping up with social media. We get on a steady clip and then we get busy and social media updates fall to the bottom of the list.

For many of you, this is an incredibly busy season. May brings all kinds of endings, transitions, and celebrations and all of that requires our focus and attention. We’ll talk more about what that’s like and ways to provide some support and stability through all of it later this week.

In the meantime, remember to give yourselves grace. We can’t do all of the things, all of the time. Sometimes certain things are going to fall to the side and we have to be ok with that - it allows space for other things to grow.

So take this Sunday - our last day of Mental Health Awareness month - as a reset. Take it as a chance to let go of the expectations that no longer serve you and embrace the ones you set for yourself.

There’s more than one way to do life.

Mother’s Day can hold a lot of different feelings.
For some, it’s joyful.
For some, it’s exhausting.
For some, it comes with grief, stress, guilt, complicated relationships, or the constant feeling that you should somehow be doing more.

We know that a lot of caregivers are carrying an incredible amount behind the scenes. Coordinating appointments. Managing school systems. Advocating. Regulating themselves while helping their child regulate. Loving fiercely while running on empty.

So today, we just want to say this:
You do not have to be perfect to matter deeply to your child.

To the moms, grandmothers, foster moms, stepmoms, guardians, and caregivers doing the work in ways people don’t always see .... we see you.

Happy Mother’s Day.

I'll be the first to admit - we are terrible at taking pictures. There's a few reasons for that but one of the big ones is that we spend our time being present and focused with our participants and that's really hard to do if you're also behind the camera lens.

We did manage to capture a few images this week. Our participants were busy building executive functioning skills - planning and organizing and problem solving - communication skills, and teamwork .... all while having fun and making connections.

That’s the thing about our groups. A lot of the growth happens in the middle of the moments that just look like kids playing, creating, laughing, building, or talking. But underneath all of that, there’s intention, support, practice, and confidence growing little by little every week.

We’re really proud of the space these kids are creating together.

Happy Star Wars Day ✨

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....

Let’s be honest—half the characters in Star Wars would absolutely get labeled “too much.”

Too emotional. Too impulsive. A little chaotic.

Yet…those are usually the exact characters who end up saving the galaxy.

So if your kid is bringing big feelings, big energy, or a little rebel spirit today…they might just be on their hero arc.

May the Force (and maybe a snack + a break) be with you today.

Feeling the Sunday Scaries? You're not alone!

Let's commit to a brief mental health reset tonight.

Turn off the notifications, practice some deep breathing, or jot down a few things you're grateful for.

Even 15 minutes of intentional calm can help you feel more prepared and less overwhelmed for the week to come.

How are you resetting tonight?

Today is National Teacher Day, and honestly, one day doesn’t even begin to touch what educators are holding right now.

At Balanced Learning Center, we get a close-up view of it. Teachers definitely aren’t just delivering curriculum—they’re navigating overwhelmed nervous systems, trying to support kids who are misunderstood, and working within systems that don’t always give them what they actually need.

Still, they show up.

The educators who are making the biggest difference are the ones who pause, get curious, and build relationships first. They understand thatrelationships and regulation come before anything else.

That work is not easy. It’s not always recognized and it matters so much more than people realize.

Some of our summer weeks are already filling and we’re just getting into May!

Our Summer Program is intentionally designed for kids who need:
– structure without rigidity
– support without pressure
– connection without forced social skills
– space to actually feel successful

Small groups. Thoughtful staff. Real relationships.

Thankfully, because of support from United Way, we’re able to keep it accessible for families.

If you’ve been thinking about it, this is the nudge, don’t wait until your preferred week is full!

Reach out or register to hold your spot.

As we close out April, let's remember Autism acceptance doesn't stop here.

It’s not about blue lights or puzzle pieces or surface-level awareness

It IS about...

✔ listening to autistic voices
✔ changing systems, not just attitudes
✔ supporting autonomy, communication, and access
✔ unlearning compliance-based approaches

If April meant something to you, don’t let it end here.

Ask yourself...

“What is one thing I will do differently because of what I’ve learned?”

That’s how we can all move toward a more inclusive and supportive community.
