A few members of Berkeley County Sheriff's Office - WV had significant roles in authoring and helping bring West Virginia’s peer support law to passage and statewide implementation. We appreciated the chance to acknowledge their work and the impact it is having on peer support and the first responder community across West Virginia.

And shout out to all the peer supporters, coordinators, and trusted members of departments we know, who are doing this often unseen work every day helping connect people with resources, and being there when someone needs support. It matters.

Long before peer support had official roles, the fire service has had its way of taking care of each other and working things out.

Around the table.
On the bumper.
Sometimes, on the bench.

The call that sticks around.
The loss that hits a little differently.
The stuff going on at home.
The things you don’t quite know what to do with yet.

Sometimes you talk. Sometimes you listen. Sometimes you give each other hell to get a break from the weight of it. Sometimes you sit there and don’t say much at all.

And sometimes, somewhere in that conversation, someone recognizes that a person might need more.

“I know who you should talk to.”

Professional counseling doesn’t replace what has always happened around the table, on the bumper, or the bench.

Begin Counseling is grateful to be a place where firefighters and first responders can turn when they need specialized support. We don't take a single word-of-mouth referral for granted and remain committed to earning that trust everyday.

Ride-alongs are one of the ways our therapists stay current with the realities of law enforcement. The better we understand the work, the more equipped we are to provide competent, informed counseling for first responders. Julie Belle Huff, LPC spent Friday evening with HPD. Thank you Hagerstown Police Department for welcoming us on shift and collaborating in this way.

We had the opportunity to return to the National Targeting Center in Sterling, Virginia to be with U.S. Customs and Border Protection Peer Support Team to present at their quarterly training.

We shared about professional counseling with first responders, along with Q&A where the team engaged with us in meaningful conversation. We’re thankful for the continued collaboration with CBP and the opportunity to be part of their ongoing efforts to care for their officers and families.

Our clinical team spent the evening together for an in-house training focused specifically on the intricacies of working with law enforcement in professional counseling.

Ongoing learning and time spent alongside first responders, help our therapists build the unique competence required to care for this community well. We are grateful for the collaboration with many local agencies and for every client who entrusts us with their care.

We appreciated Sgt. Routhier taking the time to stop by the office this week to meet with members of our clinical team who are planning ride-alongs and station visits with Hagerstown Police Department in the coming months.

We welcomed the opportunity to discuss ways to increase access to therapists who understand the unique stressors of demanding professions and to consistently improve how Begin supports law enforcement through professional counseling.

Begin’s Clinical Team met together on screen today for Amanda Profilio, LICSW’s presentation “Best Practices for Telehealth” highlighting how to optimally provide professional counseling for our clients, including first responders, when using our telehealth platform. We are available in-person at our office in Berkeley County, WV and virtually throughout all of WV, MD, and VA.

Amanda and Karlee enjoyed spending time with troopers at the Martinsburg Detachment on Thursday evening. We had the opportunity to stay awhile, have many meaningful conversations, and continue building relationships in order for Begin Counseling to better support law enforcement in our region and state through professional counseling. We appreciate the warm welcome from West Virginia State Police not just yesterday, but any time we visit the office.
