Flu Vaccine prevented 80% of pediatric deaths.

No one really wants to think about the flu vaccine in the middle of summer, but a recent CDC study caught my attention. It found that from 2016 to 2025, the flu vaccine was about 80% effective in preventing death among children and adolescents, including 77% effectiveness in those with underlying medical conditions and 87% in otherwise healthy children. These findings are especially important as vaccination rates have declined in recent years, contributing to a record number of pediatric deaths during the 2024–2025 season. The ideal time to get vaccinated remains September through November, ahead of peak flu activity.

Early puberty

Precocious puberty, or early puberty, is defined as the onset of pubertal changes before age 8 in girls and 9 in boys. It typically presents as testicular enlargement in boys and breast budding in girls. This is different from premature adrenarche, which involves the appearance of p***c hair, body odor, and acne without true pubertal development.

Studies show that puberty is starting earlier worldwide. Several factors may contribute to this trend, including increased body weight (with overweight or obese children entering puberty earlier), environmental influences such as air pollution, limited green space, and exposure to nighttime light, as well as childhood stress and exposure to chemicals found in plastics and personal care products that may disrupt hormones. Parents should discuss any early signs of puberty with their pediatrician.

All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs)

A manufacturer has recalled nearly 5,000 youth all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) after multiple mechanical and safety defects were identified, following the tragic death of a 6-year-old boy.

As a reminder, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) strongly recommends that no child or adolescent younger than 16 years of age operate or ride as a passenger on an ATV. These vehicles are heavy, powerful, and inherently difficult for children to control, placing them at high risk for serious injury or death.
