A preliminary study led by Dr. Timothy Cannon, Sheridan Director, Molecular Tumor Board, Co-Director, Gastrointestinal Cancer Program, Inova Schar Cancer, examined 94 runners (ages 35 to 50) who had completed multiple marathons or ultramarathons.

Nearly half had colon polyps, and about 15% had advanced polyps, which can sometimes develop into cancer. Dr. Cannon suggested extreme running may temporarily divert blood away from the gut to the legs, potentially affecting the intestinal lining over time.

A larger follow-up study is now underway to better understand the findings.

If youโ€™re an endurance athlete and have persistent gastrointestinal issues like cramping or re**al bleeding, itโ€™s important to see a doctor. ๐Ÿฉบ

Dr. Steven Nathan, Schar Chair of Advanced Lung Disease and Lung Transplant at Inova and chair of the Steering Committee for the global TETON program, presented the TETON-1 study findings at the 2026 American Thoracic Society (ATS) International Conference in May. The study was simultaneously published in The New England Journal of Medicine, with Dr. Nathan serving as first author.

The study showed that inhaled treprostinil (Tyvaso) helped preserve lung function and reduced the risk of clinical worsening in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a serious progressive lung disease that causes permanent scarring of the lungs โ€“ bringing the drug one step closer to regulatory approval for this use.

Dr. Christopher King, Associate Medical Director of the Advanced Lung Disease Program at Inova Fairfax Hospital, served as Inova's site principal investigator. Inova enrolled the highest number of participants in the pivotal study.
