Our art therapist recently spent time with a local Girl Scout troop exploring friendship, compromise, and kindness through creativity. 💜

Each girl designed a quilt square that represented who she is, then worked together to discover commonalities with their friends’ squares. It was a fun, meaningful way to practice empathy, connection, and being a good friend.

A successful day filled with creativity, learning, and lots of smiles!

Primitive reflexes play an important role in early development, but when they remain active beyond infancy, they can sometimes impact coordination, posture, balance, visual-motor skills, attention, and motor planning.

In this session, we incorporated activities targeting:
⭐ ATNR (Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex)
⭐ STNR (Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex)
⭐ TLR (Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex)

While reflex integration is only one piece of the puzzle, these movement-based activities can help support the foundational skills needed for participation in everyday occupations.

OTs really do look at every object and think: how can I make this therapeutic? 😂 If the documentation has to get done, we might as well get some vestibular input too!

Shaving cream is one of those simple materials that can target a wide range of skills depending on how it’s used.

In these examples, we’re working on:
• pre-writing and fine motor skills
• sensory processing and tolerance
• motor planning and creativity
• body awareness and core stability

What looks like a messy activity is often a more accessible entry point for kids who aren’t ready for higher-demand tasks like pencil and paper.

It also allows us to quickly adjust the level of challenge based on the child in front of us.

This is the foundation of play-based therapy — meeting a child where they are while still working toward functional goals. Save for an easy, adaptable therapy idea!

Child-led play = powerful outcomes

By incorporating his interest in pretend kitchen play, we challenged:
• Dynamic balance
• Motor planning
• Coordination across varied surfaces

All while keeping him engaged and motivated 🙌

Baking is more than just a treat 🍪
It builds fine motor skills (stirring, scooping), coordination, sequencing, attention, and even sensory tolerance—all while encouraging social interaction when we work together 🌎💚
We loved celebrating Earth Day with a shared session!
