Congratulations to one of our own, Madeline, for earning her Master's Degree in Forensic Psychology! 🎓

Madeline joined our team in 2022, most of you recognizing her as the friendly smile that greeted you as you come through our doors. Although she is not behind the front desk as much, you may catch glimpses of her doing psychometry work or organizing our forensic evaluations. Madeline has been a dedicated, hardworking, and highly valued member of our team, and we are so lucky to have her here at Benson.

Congratulations, Madeline! We are so proud of you!

The Empty Chair

Thanksgiving looks different when there’s an empty chair at the table. If you're carrying the pain of a recent loss this holiday season, it can make you want to avoid even the most cherished traditions, and that’s ok.

The first Thanksgiving after I lost my mom, we opted to do something totally different. We went to the cities and stayed at a hotel. We ate Thanksgiving dinner at a restaurant. We did Black Friday shopping at the Mall of America. Somehow, it seemed less “different” if it was “totally different”. That was easier than looking at the empty chair. It was easier than trying to make her “cookie salad” without her. It was easier than realizing there would be many more firsts that year.

If this is your first Thanksgiving after the loss of a loved one, don’t feel the pressure to “carry on” and do everything just as you did it before. It’s ok to change the plan. Or not. And it’s definitely ok to feel sad.

Find a way to honor that loss. Maybe everyone goes around the table and shares their favorite memory, maybe you put on their favorite holiday movie and it plays in the background while you clean the house and get ready for company. Maybe you wear that ugly old Christmas sweater they insisted on wearing to Thanksgiving dinner each year.

Remember, your connection to them doesn't disappear; it just needs a new way to be expressed.

Sending peace to all those with an empty plate this week.

Feel Pressure to have the “Perfect Holiday?”

The holiday season is meant to be joyful, but the pressure to be perfect can turn "jolly" into "jumbled" and “happy” into “harried”.

Ready for a perspective shift?

This is your reminder that you don't have to do it all!

Here are 3 quick tips to manage your mental load this month:

🗓️ Schedule 'Self-Care Slots': Block time for yourself just like you would a work meeting or a party. Non-negotiable! Don’t have the time or the money for a weekend trip or day at the spa? Set aside a couple hours to re-watch your favorite holiday movie, look through some family photo albums, call a dear friend, or just sit and relax with a good book.

⚖️ Perfect is the Enemy of Done: Aim for "good enough," not flawless. A relaxed host is better than a stressed-out perfectionist. The house might be messy, the cookies might be store bought, you don’t have enough matching plates for the number of people coming. So what? Your table will probably not be “Pinterest worthy”. Who cares? Focus on building memories.

🗣️ Set Gentle Boundaries: It's okay to say "no thank you" to attending an event, participating in the office cookie exchange, or even requests to volunteer at your child’s school. There are seasons of our life when we give, and seasons when we receive. They are all part of the journey.

Remember, the best gift you can give your family is a calm and present you.
