Could YOUR dog be a lifesaver? 🩸

Not every dog is the right fit for blood donation — but many are!

Ideal donors are:
✅ Healthy
✅ Calm and friendly
✅ Typically larger dogs (more than 50 lbs)
✅ Up to date on vaccines
✅ Between the ages of 1 and 5 years old

Our donors are carefully screened, monitored, and kept as comfortable as possible during the process 💙

And the best part? They help save lives.

Educational Mondays! 🐾

Dogs have blood types too… and yes, it matters!

The most important one we look at is called DEA 1 — dogs are either positive or negative.

Giving the wrong blood type can cause a reaction, which is why we always test before giving a transfusion.

Some dogs (DEA 1 negative) are especially valuable because they can safely donate to more patients—basically the “universal donors” of the dog world!

June RRAEH Blood Bank Newsletter ☀️

We are so grateful for all of our incredible donors who made this moth possible! 💜

Because of them, we were able to reach a new record for canine blood units used in a single month — a true reflection of how vital this program is for our patients.

We also welcomed a new donor, Drake, and said thank you to two very special retirees: Patrick and Ernesto, our last greyhound donors 🌟

Every donation makes a difference and we couldn’t do this without our amazing community! 🩸

Educational Monday 🩸🐾

Ever wonder what happens to blood after it’s donated?

After collection, the blood is placed into a centrifuge (a machine that spins it really fast) to separate it into different components.

This allows us to turn one donation into multiple lifesaving products:
❤️ Packed red blood cells
💛 Plasma

Why does this matter? Because not every patient needs everything — we can give them exactly what they need.

Pretty cool that one donor can help more than one patient, right?

Blood Donor Spotlight 🩸🐾

Meet Leaf! He came in on short notice yesterday to help us restock our feline blood supply — and because of him, we’re ready for the next patient who needs a lifesaving transfusion 🐱

Leaf handled his donation like a pro, and we are so grateful for amazing donors and owners like this!

And his favorite part of donation? The snacks, of course 😋

Shall we start a new series…. Educational Mondays?!🩸🐾

The first photo is Fresh Whole Blood - meaning it’s collected from a blood donor and given to a patient within 6 hours.

Why does that matter? Because it contains everything:
❤️ Red blood cells
💛 Plasma proteins
💉 Clotting factors
⚡️ Electrolytes
🩹 Platelets

We typically use whole blood for patients with:
- Anemia, coagulopathies, thrombocytopenia

Not every patient needs whole blood— but when they do, it can be lifesaving.

And this handsome guy in the second photo? Meet Drake 🐶💙 Since we don’t store whole blood, donations like this are often last-minute calls to our amazing donors so we can help a patient the same day!

A thank you to our retired blood donor, Patrick! ❤️

After more than 2 years in the RRAEH donor program, Patrick is turning 8 years old and is officially hanging up his donor bandana.

Since October of 2023, Patrick has made 11 blood donations, generously giving 4,955 mLs of blood and helping more than 13 different patients in need of lifesaving transfusions.

Patrick was always a joy to have at RRAEH, brightening our days with his bubble personality, love for treats, and constantly waging tail.

Thank you for being a hero and enjoy your retirement— you’ve more than earned it! 🩸🐾
