Preseason gets all the injury-prevention attention. Real talk: week 3 and 4 of the actual season is where we start seeing the damage.

Here's why. The adrenaline of week one masks a lot. By week three or four, the accumulated load has caught up — and the injuries we're now treating aren't from a single bad hit. They're from three weeks of a small issue nobody addressed.

If your athlete mentioned something felt "a little off" back in week one and it's still there, that's not something that fixes itself with more games.

Preseason recovery advice always sounds the same: rest more.

Here's what the research on high school athletes actually shows: passive rest is the least effective recovery method there is. Active recovery — real, light movement — outperforms it every time.

This is part 1 of 3 breaking down the science-backed recovery habits we use with our own athletes. Swipe through for what to actually do, and why Pilates fits in a way most people don't expect.

Save this for the athlete in your life who thinks recovery means the couch.

Here's what I mean. A kid sees a PT for an injury. Once they're "fixed," PT stops. Nobody adds the Pilates work that keeps it fixed. Nobody adds the stretching that keeps the body loose enough to stay ahead of the next one.

Three separate decisions, usually made at three different times — often only after something's already gone wrong.

I'm Laura, DPT and former Division I soccer player. Here's the thing nobody tells athletes and parents: physical therapy, Pilates, and assisted stretching aren't three separate decisions. They're one system, and most people are only using a third of it.

PT finds and fixes what's actually going on. Pilates builds the strength and control that keeps it fixed. Stretch keeps the body loose enough to do both without fighting itself every week.

We built In Motion around all three because athletes don't get hurt from doing too little — they get hurt from having gaps. This is how we close them.

If that's the kind of care you've been looking for, hey — nice to meet you. Comment SEASON and we'll tell you exactly where to start.

Some hills are worth dying on… especially when you’ve lived both sides of the athlete-to-coach pipeline. 🫡🩵

We believe training should be intentional, recovery should be proactive, and movement should be built around *you*—not a one-size-fits-all plan. Whether it’s physical therapy, Pilates, performance training, or simply taking recovery more seriously, the goal is always the same: help you move better, feel stronger, and stay doing what you love.

And yes, we will forever advocate for the basics too: fuel well, hydrate, sleep, and take care of your body before it forces you to. 😌

Ready to train with people who understand athletes because we’ve been there ourselves? Come get In Motion. 🩵
