🦴 Staying active in your 60s and beyond? Don't let a stress fracture slow you down.
Today's baby boomers are walking, hiking, and playing pickleball more than ever β€” but as bone density naturally declines, repetitive activity can lead to stress fractures: tiny cracks caused by overuse. They're easy to mistake for a nagging ache that should just go away.
Physical therapy is key to a safe, full recovery. At Farmingdale Physical Therapy East, we help you heal the right way β€” restoring strength and mobility, correcting the movement patterns behind the injury, and building the balance and bone support to help prevent it from coming back. πŸ’ͺ
Persistent pain during activity? Don't push through it. Let us help you get back to what you love β€” safely.
Same-day appointments available. Most insurance plans accepted.

β›³ August is National Golf Month β€” is your body ready for the back nine?
Whether you're chasing your best score or just enjoying a relaxed round with friends, golf asks a lot of your body. That smooth swing depends on healthy hips, a stable core, mobile shoulders, and a pain-free lower back β€” and repetitive rotation is a common culprit behind golfer's elbow, low back strain, and hip discomfort.
At Farmingdale Physical Therapy East, we help Long Island golfers move better, swing stronger, and stay off the injured list all season long. Led by John C. Dugan, PT, OCS, NCS, GCS β€” a certified Advanced Hip Clinician Specialist β€” our team builds personalized programs to improve mobility, prevent injury, and keep you playing the game you love. πŸŒοΈβ€β™‚οΈ

Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports among older adultsβ€”but with all that fun and activity, some players are experiencing a condition commonly called β€œpickleball elbow,” similar to tennis elbow.

This happens when repetitive swinging and gripping strain the tendons in the elbow, leading to pain and irritation over time.

Here’s what to know:

βœ… What it feels like: Pain or burning on the outside of the elbow
βœ… When it shows up: During gripping, swinging, or lifting objects
βœ… Common cause: Repetitive paddle use and overuse of forearm muscles
βœ… Who it affects: Active adults, especially beginners or frequent players
βœ… What helps: Rest, stretching, ice, and modifying activity levels
βœ… How PT helps: Strengthening forearm muscles, improving flexibility, and correcting movement patterns

The good news is that with the right treatment and adjustments, most people can return to playing comfortably and safely.

At Farmingdale PT East, we help active adults stay in the game while reducing pain and preventing re-injury.

Many older adults notice that joint pain and stiffness don’t always go away when the weather warms upβ€”in some cases, it can even feel worse. While summer is often associated with relief, several factors can contribute to increased joint discomfort.

Higher humidity and changes in barometric pressure may affect how joints feel, especially for those with arthritis. Dehydration can also play a role, since joints rely on proper hydration to stay lubricated and move comfortably. In addition, increased activity during the summerβ€”like walking more, gardening, or travelingβ€”can put extra strain on already sensitive joints.

The good news is that there are ways to help manage discomfort and stay active. Gentle stretching, staying well hydrated, pacing activity, and working with a physical therapist can all help improve mobility and reduce pain.

At Farmingdale PT East, we help older adults stay active, mobile, and independent through personalized physical therapy designed to support joint health and everyday function.

One of the most important things we can do as we age is keep our bodies moving β€” and our joints are at the center of it all. As the body ages, joints may become stiffer due to reduced cartilage and changes in connective tissue, bone density can decrease increasing the risk of fractures, and balance and coordination may decline as reaction times slow. But here's the good news: these changes don't have to mean slowing down or giving up the activities you love.

A few habits that go a long way toward protecting your joints for the long haul:
🚢 Stay consistently active β€” Low-impact activities like walking, swimming, and yoga keep joints mobile, support cardiovascular health, and help maintain muscle mass that protects your joints.
πŸ’ͺ Build strength around your joints β€” Strengthening the muscles that surround and support your hips, knees, and spine reduces stress on the joints themselves and helps prevent injury.
🧘 Prioritize flexibility and range of motion β€” Regular stretching keeps connective tissue supple and helps maintain the fluid, comfortable movement needed for everyday tasks.
βš–οΈ Work on balance β€” Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults, with over 3 million seniors treated for fall-related injuries annually. Balance training is one of the most proactive steps you can take to stay safe and independent.

Physical therapy is increasingly viewed as a proactive approach to long-term health and functional longevity β€” not just a response to injury. A personalized PT program can address your specific needs, helping you move better, hurt less, and stay independent longer. Aging well isn't about doing less β€” it's about moving smarter. πŸ’™

06/10/2026

As we age, changes in muscle strength, bone density, and joint flexibility can gradually affect our posture β€” and those changes can have a bigger impact than most people realize. Poor posture can lead to chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain, balance issues, decreased mobility, and even an increased risk of falls. On the flip side, working toward better alignment can meaningfully improve comfort, stability, and overall quality of life.

Here are a few things that make a real difference:
πŸ’ͺ Strengthen your core β€” Keeping your core muscles strong and your torso pliable helps support your spine and promote better posture and overall health.
πŸͺ‘ Check your seating β€” Use chairs with proper lumbar support, keep feet flat on the floor, and maintain hips and knees at 90-degree angles to avoid slumping.
πŸ” Keep moving β€” Breaking up sedentary time is one of the most effective strategies β€” even standing and stretching briefly every 30 minutes helps.
🧠 Practice mindful alignment β€” Regularly check in with your posture: ears over shoulders, shoulders back, core gently engaged, pelvis neutral.

And when home strategies aren't enough, a physical therapist can help. A skilled PT can provide personalized assessment, guidance, and targeted exercises to address the underlying factors contributing to poor posture β€” from tight muscles and joint stiffness to core weakness and balance concerns. Better posture isn't about being perfect β€” it's about feeling better every day. πŸ’™
