Relationships are at the heart of development. đź’›

Relationship-based models recognize that children learn best when they feel safe, connected, understood, and genuinely engaged with the people around them. Instead of focusing only on skills or behaviors, we look at the whole child—and use meaningful relationships, play, shared joy, and connection as the foundation for growth.

At our practice, we believe connection comes before compliance, and relationships create the foundation for learning. When children feel seen and supported, they can build communication, regulation, problem-solving, confidence, and independence in ways that are meaningful to them.

Because the most powerful intervention isn't always a technique—it can be a trusted relationship, a moment of shared joy, or simply being willing to enter a child's world. 🌱

From a neurodiversity-affirming perspective, when a child repeatedly opens and closes a door, lines up cars, spins a wheel, or pushes the same button over and over, we don’t need to immediately redirect them toward “more appropriate” play.

There is meaning in what they are doing.

Play can be a way to explore cause and effect, movement, sensory experiences, predictability, problem-solving, and connection. And when we join a child in their play instead of changing it, we create opportunities for shared attention, communication, creativity, and deeper engagement.

The goal isn’t to make a child play the “right” way.

✨ The goal is to understand what they’re communicating through play and build from there.

Meet them where they are. Join their interests. Follow their lead. And let play grow from a place of connection. 🌱

🧠 What are primitive reflexes?

Primitive reflexes are automatic movement patterns that help babies survive and develop during the first year of life. As children grow, these reflexes are typically integrated, allowing for more coordinated movement, attention, balance, and self-regulation.

When primitive reflexes remain active longer than expected, some children may experience challenges with motor skills, coordination, posture, attention, sensory processing, or emotional regulation. While retained reflexes are just one piece of the puzzle, understanding them can provide valuable insight into a child's development and help guide individualized support.

At Therapy Spot, we look at the whole child to understand how movement, sensory processing, regulation, and relationships work together to support learning and participation. đź’™
