Processed foods exists on a spectrum. Instagram's breaks down that spectrum starting with corn.

"Food in Every Form: Corn
Today's lunch got me thinking. On our plates we had leftover corn on the cob (which, by the way, is delicious cold! 😋), corn chips, and cheese-flavored popped corn snacks.

They're all corn. Just different forms.

🌽 Whole: Corn on the cob
🌽 Minimally processed: Frozen corn
🌽 Processed: Corn tortillas or corn chips
🌽 Ultra-processed: Cheese-flavored corn snacks

So...what's the difference?
Food processing exists on a spectrum. As foods are processed, ingredients may be added and the food often becomes more convenient—but sometimes less filling and lower in fiber and nutrients.

Whole foods are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds that support your gut, heart, and overall health.

Minimally processed foods still look a lot like the original food and make excellent everyday choices.

Processed foods, like corn tortillas and plain corn chips, can absolutely fit into a healthy eating pattern.

Ultra-processed foods often contain ingredients you wouldn't typically find in your home kitchen and are designed to be extra convenient and highly palatable.

The goal isn't to fear processed foods. It's to understand them.

Fill most of your plate with whole and minimally processed foods. Enjoy processed foods as part of a balanced diet. And let ultra-processed foods be occasional guests—not everyday staples.

Because sometimes the best choice is packing a bag of cheese-flavored corn snacks for a long mountain biking road trip with friends. Food is nutrition, but it's also convenience, fun, and real life.

Here's to making informed choices—not perfect ones." Meghan Ritz, Physician Assistant and Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program Director at The Metabolic and Bariatric Institute at San Juan Regional Medical Center.

It is with deep sadness and profound respect that we honor the life and legacy of Larry Marcum. Larry helped build the emergency medical system that San Juan County relies on today. After moving to Farmington in 1978 to lead the paramedic service, his vision, expertise and dedication transformed emergency medical care throughout our region.

Among his many accomplishments, Larry was instrumental in developing and implementing San Juan County's 911 system and played a pivotal role in achieving Trauma Center designation for San Juan Regional Medical Center. His leadership and commitment to excellence earned him the state's first EMS Excellence Award, recognition as Paramedic of the Year, and induction into the San Juan Regional Medical Center Hall of Fame in 2006.

During his 25 years of service at our community hospital, Larry's work touched countless lives. His legacy lives on in the emergency care our community receives every day and in the many friends, colleagues and patients whose lives were changed by his dedication. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Larry's family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him. A celebration of life will be held on August 15 at 11:00 a.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church.
