Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month: Supporting Memory Care with Grace
June is Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month, a time when the purple ribbon appears in communities across the country. Alzheimer's disease affects more than six million Americans, and the number is expected to double by 2050. Behind that statistic are families navigating a long, often exhausting journey—and a growing body of knowledge about how to walk it with grace, patience, and hope.

Understanding Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, a progressive brain disorder that gradually erodes memory, thinking, and eventually the ability to carry out daily tasks. It is not a normal part of aging. Early symptoms—forgetfulness, difficulty finding words, disorientation in familiar places, changes in mood—are often subtle. Early diagnosis is important because it opens more options for treatment, planning, and support.

The Power of Structure and Routine
For someone living with Alzheimer's, the world can feel increasingly unpredictable. Consistent daily routines reduce anxiety, preserve skills longer, and create a sense of safety. Simple adjustments—meals at the same time, a familiar morning sequence, visual cues posted around the home—can make an enormous difference.

Communication Strategies That Help
• Speak slowly and clearly, using short, simple sentences.

• Make eye contact and use a calm, reassuring tone.

• Ask yes-or-no questions rather than open-ended ones.

• Avoid correcting or arguing—meet your loved one in their reality.

• Use touch, music, and familiar objects to connect when words fall short.

Supporting the Caregiver, Too
Family members caring for someone with Alzheimer's carry one of the heaviest and most selfless burdens there is. Burnout is real, and breaks are essential—not optional. Support groups, respite care, and open conversations with other family members all help. Caring for yourself isn't a luxury; it's what makes continued caregiving possible.

How Comfort Keepers Can Help
Comfort Keepers of Farmington offers specialized dementia and Alzheimer's care designed to preserve dignity, reduce anxiety, and create moments of joy. Our caregivers are trained in proven memory-care techniques, including the Interactive Caregiving™ approach, which focuses on what your loved one can still do and enjoy. We also provide respite care so family caregivers can rest, recharge, and return renewed.

If your family is navigating an Alzheimer's or dementia diagnosis, please call Comfort Keepers of Farmington at (248) 919-8760. We're here to walk this road with you.

At Comfort Keepers, showing up is about more than care.

It’s about connection.

We take time to truly know the seniors and families we serve like their stories, their routines, the little things that make them feel like themselves. It’s in the shared smiles, the quiet conversations, and the moments of simply being there that trust begins to grow.

When care is genuine, it feels like family. 💙

There’s something powerful that happens when we intentionally pause or when we step out of the noise of our daily responsibilities and ground ourselves in purpose.

It’s in those moments of reflection that we reconnect with our “why”… the reason we show up, the reason we care, the reason we keep going.

Because the truth is simple: if we are not caring for ourselves, we cannot fully care for others.

What made this gathering so special wasn’t just the conversations—it was the energy, the openness, the genuine connection. You could feel it in the room. A shared commitment to being better for ourselves, and therefore better for those we serve. That’s where real impact begins.

We are so excited to continue building this space together as we welcome more of our seniors and their families into this circle to create deeper connections, stronger support, and something truly meaningful.

Our next CareKind Coalition gathering will be in June, and we meet every other month on the 3rd Wednesday.
