🧠💪 **Cognitive Camp – Week 1 Recap!** 💪🧠

We had a great kickoff to Cognitive Camp this week!

We talked about how the brain changes as we age and what that can mean for memory, attention, and daily thinking skills. We also discussed findings from the U.S. POINTER Study, which shows that healthy lifestyle habits can help support brain health over time.

💡 Key takeaway: *What’s good for the body is good for the brain.*

We also highlighted the importance of keeping track of basic health measures like **blood pressure and weight**, since heart and vascular health play a big role in brain health.

📺 Here’s a short video that ties it all together: https://youtu.be/C8WtL26b1BY?si=4ZYiEVeDjZn-qNy6

📅 **Next week (June 17th) 2-3PM **
We’ll focus on **exercise and how movement can improve cognitive function**, including practical ways to stay active for a healthier brain. Everyone is welcome. You do not have to attend all sessions.

Water Safety Fact Check: "Dry Drowning" and "Secondary Drowning"
You may have heard scary stories about "dry drowning" or "secondary drowning." Doctors no longer use these terms. They simply call it drowning.

Here's what parents should know:
💦Problems from a water accident usually happen within a few hours.
💦A child who coughs a little after swallowing water and then acts normally will usually be okay.
💦 Children do not suddenly drown days later after being completely fine.
⚠️ Get medical help right away if your child has:
• Trouble breathing
• A cough that gets worse or won't stop
• Vomiting
• Extreme sleepiness
• Confusion or unusual behavior
• Blue lips or skin

The best protection is prevention.
✅ Stay within arm's reach of young children around water
✅ Put phones and distractions away and choose a "Water Watcher.
✅ Use life jackets when needed
✅ Make sure children learn water safety skills
✅ Learn CPR

Most drowning tragedies can be prevented. Stay alert, stay close, and enjoy the water safely.

With summer here and school out, we are seeing a significant increase in E-scooter traffic throughout our community. While E-scooters can be a fun and convenient way to get around, they also present serious safety risks when riders fail to follow traffic laws.

🚗 Drivers: Please watch carefully for E-scooter riders. Children and teens may enter roadways unexpectedly, fail to stop at intersections, or be difficult to see.
🛴 E-Scooter Riders: E-scooters are not toys when operated on public streets.
• Wear a helmet every ride.
• Obey all traffic signs, signals, and right-of-way laws.
• Pay attention to your surroundings.
• DO NOT cut through parking lots.
• Ride responsibly and respect others.

Preventable accidents can happen in seconds. Whether you are behind the wheel or on an E-scooter, please make safety your priority.
Let's work together to keep our community safe this summer.

This week is National CPR & AED Awareness Week!

Would you know what to do if someone's heart suddenly stopped?

Most cardiac arrests happen at home, which means the person who needs help could be someone you love. Learning CPR and how to use an AED can help save a life.

Immediate CPR can double or even triple a person's chance of survival.

✅ Call 911
✅ Start CPR right away
✅ Use an AED if one is available
✅ Keep going until help arrives

You don't have to be a doctor or a first responder to save a life. Anyone can learn these lifesaving skills.

This National CPR & AED Awareness Week, take a few minutes to learn CPR. One day, those few minutes could make all the difference. Watch this video for some quick demonstrations.
