Meet Dr. Elizabeth Piner, the newest pediatrician at our Robeson Street office. She earned her medical degree with distinction from ECU's Brody School of Medicine; she is a mom herself, and she has a Golden Retriever who is, by all accounts, a very good boy.

Fall in North Carolina means flu season has begun, so do not let it catch your family off guard.

This year's vaccines protect against three strains, and kids have a few options, from the standard shot to a needle-free nasal spray for ages 2 and up. Ask us which is the best fit for your child.

Timing matters: the vaccine takes about two weeks to build full protection, so getting it now, before flu runs through the classroom, gives your child a real head start.

And it protects more than them. When older kids and adults are vaccinated, it helps shield the babies too young for a flu shot and the grandparents most likely to get seriously ill.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends one every year for everyone 6 months and older, ideally by the end of October.

"My child got the flu shot and caught the flu anyway, so why bother?"

It is a fair question.

The vaccine was never built to block every strain. Even last year, when a new strain appeared after the vaccine had already been made, it still cut a child's chance of ending up in the hospital by about 41 percent. That is the difference between a rough week on the couch and a trip to the emergency room.

Your baby is on their belly on a blanket, and about ninety seconds in, the fussing starts. Sound familiar? Tummy time is hard work for little muscles, which is exactly why it matters.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends at least 30 minutes of tummy time a day to help build the strength babies need to roll, sit, and crawl, and to prevent flat spots on the back of the head.

Here is a trick for summer: take it outside. Lay a blanket in the shade and let those little hands discover grass, a cool spoon, a soft toy. New textures keep them curious enough to forget they are working.

Maybe you noticed your kid sitting a little closer to the TV this summer, or squinting at the menu board at the drive-thru. It is easy to miss during busy months and easy to catch at a checkup.

August is Children's Eye Health and Safety Month, and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends annual vision screenings for school-age children. A back-to-school visit is the perfect time to check their eyes, make sure their immunizations are up to date, and knock out the forms before the first bell.
