Life lately with Ironman training…

My bike and I have been spending a lot of time together. Feels a little excessive at this point, but I’m committed.

Here’s your reminder to not always take training - and life - so seriously… have some freakin fun, babe. Life is hard enough already. And heavy.

And sometimes it sucks. Sometimes your heart breaks. Or your dad dies…and then your brother dies within a few years. And you lose yourself in the grief.

Sometimes you can’t see a light and the world looks bleak. So you gotta make your own light. Find your joy. What lights you up. Love your own damn heart as hard as you can.

Maybe too much motivational talk for the world of AI. But don’t forget we are all humans. Everybody hurts sometimes (yes, REM is my jam)… but for real, let some of that heavy s**t go if you can.

Even if it’s just the drive for perfection in your training… every day. We don’t need perfection.

Lettttttt it go.

And go enjoy yourself today. Whatever that looks like for you right now. Even if you feel like a dork in a world where picture perfect content gets the attention.

Recovery week for me so I’m hitting up the running trails and even some gravel bike time. Cuz as exciting as IM training has been…. my little heart misses the woods. Training plan or not.✌🏼

*Inspired by one of my athletes… who reminded me that time in the woods for your heart is never wasted.

I’d stamp this on my forehead if I could.

THE ADAPTATION YOU’RE TRYING TO DEVELOP SHOULD GUIDE HOW YOU STRENGTH TRAIN.

Because when it comes to strength training for runners, HOW we lift matters.

Can you build muscle across a wide range of reps? Absolutely

But does that mean every rep range produces the same improvements in running performance?

Nope. And I’ve got research to back that up… ;)

Building muscle, developing maximal strength, and improving running economy are related, but they are NOT interchangeable outcomes.

And yet it’s easy to see research showing similar muscle growth across rep ranges and assume the training methods are interchangeable.

But that leaves out a few important things:

- Similar muscle growth does not establish similar improvements in running economy.

- Heavy resistance training and plyometrics have research supporting improvements in running economy.

- An athlete’s experience, progression, and running demands should guide HOW we apply that research.

So next time you see research suggesting different rep ranges can produce similar muscle growth, remember:

The research we use to guide our training should actually measure the outcome we’re trying to improve.

Mmmmkay? Kk. 😉

And if you’d like a little help putting the science into practice, I’ve got you! Comment TRIAL for a free trial week of my Strength for Runners programs.

Ironman training update… and your little reminder that no training block is ever perfect. Show up and do your best. Allow yourself to be challenged as you grow through the journey, whatever that looks like for you. Deal??

Ahh, falling apart in the Ironman marathon. It happens to the best of us. ;)

So let’s talk about IRONMAN RUN EX*****ON.

If you didn’t know, treating your Ironman marathon like a stand alone marathon can lead to your run completely falling apart.

-Riding harder than you can sustain
-Falling behind on carbs before Run Mile 1
-Getting your fluid and sodium wrong for a 10-14 hour day
-Starting the run too hard off the bike

All these can quickly add up and make it difficult to use the run fitness you worked so hard to build.

So if you’re struggling to hold your run together after the bike, here’s everything you need to know about reaching T2 ready to run...and keeping it together from there.

Runners: Save this for when you decide to add a 114.4-mile warm-up to your marathon. Kidding kidding!

We will always celebrate what our bodies can DO instead of how they look.

And that’s all I have to say about that.

I started lifting weights when I was 14. I was the only girl in a boy’s hockey league and I needed to be strong to keep up.

I found a gym that I could run to, filled with old school bodybuilders, and they let me pay $5 a month to lift weights there.

My goal was to have “tree trunks for legs” as a teenage girl because that’s what I saw from my favorite pro hockey goalie. I didn’t care about being skinny, make-up, partying, or boys. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I just wanted to be strong. I wanted to be the best athlete I could be.... because that was my ticket out.

As I’ve shared before, I grew up in poverty, homeless shelters, and chaos at times. Hockey was my way out. I knew if I worked hard, I could go to college with it (and I did).

As a teenager, I’d spend hours training. Lifting weights and being on the ice helped me feel empowered when everything around me was falling apart.

Years later, I got hurt playing hockey in college and had to stop playing. My world felt like it was going under. But I didn’t give up.

I didn’t have hockey anymore, so I devoted more time to lifting, cycling, and running. I remembered that same feeling of how strong I could feel and be… even when life was hard.

Then I got sick. Surgeries. Treatments. Lots of pain. But I kept on training because it helped me feel better in many ways. I ran marathons on harsh drug treatments and put my focus on being strong enough to finish and endure.

You see, there is SO much more to training than hitting a number or a race goal or looking a certain way. It’s that sense of purpose that drives many of us… believing that we can do more and have the power to change our circumstances.

It’s the same feeling I had when I was 14 years old, then in college, and later on when battling sickness. It’s knowing that we CAN rewrite our own story.

I don’t know what you are going through right now, but I know we all have our “hard stuff” so I want to encourage you:

Keep on enduring. Keep doing YOUR thing: lift weights, cycle, run, swim, or whatever else it is. Block out the negativity, the numbers, the expectations, and the rules. Focus on how strong you are. Rewrite your own story. You got this. 👊🏼

Keep on keeping on.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…

Stop making your strength workouts look like cardio with dumbbells.

I’ve been programming strength for endurance athletes for a loooong time now and one of the biggest misconceptions I still see is that because we’re endurance athletes, we need to lift for “muscular endurance.”

But that’s the adaptation we spend HOURS every week training.

The weight room has another job, babe.

I want my athletes stronger. I want them producing more force. I want POWER. I want the muscle-tendon system capable of handling and transferring high forces.

And I want to accomplish that without adding a crap ton of fatigue that compromises the run we’re actually trying to support.

THAT is where the programming matters for runners. It’s not a special move or lift. It’s the basics and the right programming. Boring, I know.

Bht the research is really clear on why heavy, low-volume strength work makes so much sense for endurance athletes... and why doing more isn’t necessarily better.

Your strength training should make you a better endurance athlete…

Not just a really tired one. 🤪

Love a good down week. 🤌 You know you’re deep in an Ironman build when a 4-5 hour training weekend feels like a break.
