AOTM: Mark Blaney
Mark Blaney is an Arkansas-based painter and sculptor whose work begins with close observation of the natural world.
Movement, light, and the quiet interactions between people, animals, plants, and weather serve as the foundation for his compositions.
Each piece begins with drawn line - a symbolic structure suggesting motion or stillness - before unfolding into layered color. Blaney approaches painting as an extension of drawing, allowing intuition to guide the surface while maintaining a careful visual conversation with nature.
His work balances design and spontaneity. While rooted in observed forms, each painting is constructed as a complete object with its own integrity. The viewer is invited not only into the moment depicted, but into the pleasure of the hand that made it.
