Today is our Lead Prevention Educator, Christy Harter's, first day back at school teaching the Kids Have Rights program! Miss Christy started her school year at Ellis Elementary School today by teaching Kids Have Rights to kindergarten and first-grade students. Thank you, Belding School District, for offering this program and for the warm welcome back ❤ Miss Christy is excited to have a fantastic school year!

The Kids Have Rights (KHR) program is a program that educates and empowers students, school staff, parents, and caregivers to recognize, prevent, and stop child sexual abuse. Children in kindergarten through fourth grade are taught body safety education. Through interactive, engaging classroom lessons, KHR empowers students to attend to, value, and share their feelings. Students are taught how to recognize touches and situations that are, or may be, unsafe, and provided with the language and support needed to seek help from a Safe Adult when needed.

Yesterday, after two days of trial, a 12-person jury found Defendant William Talley of Ionia GUILTY of having sexually assaulted a child under the age of 13-years-old. Specifically, he was convicted of Criminal Sexual Conduct 2nd Degree and Assault with Intent to Commit Criminal Sexual Conduct 2nd Degree.

Thankfully, the brave person he sexually assaulted came forward to disclose the incident. Despite this case being one person's word against another, the jury only had to deliberate for less than 1-hour before reaching the guilty verdict.

This case presented an issue that is particularly bothersome to me and presents very real reasons why a victim may NOT come forward to report a crime like this. That reason is a fear that other members of the victim's close circle will not believe them, will turn on them, and ultimately make life worse for the victim. In this case and others I've handled, I'm regularly impressed beyond belief with these young people who evaluate the risks of disclosure and risk of non-disclosure, then chose to make their truth known. Thankfully, despite this fear panning out true in this case, many other people stood by fully supportive.

This victim may not realized it yet, but the decision to report, the courage to speak, and the will to endure questioning by a Prosecutor and Defense attorney before a jury has resulted in the community being safer.

I am deeply grateful for the work of the Ionia County Sheriff's Department, the IM SAFE CAC, and everyone else who supported the victim.

Sentencing will occur within the next couple months. Until then the Defendant will remain behind bars as his bond was revoked pursuant to law after the guilty verdict.

Please help us celebrate our Family Advocate Kaitlyn Max's fourth work anniversary at the IM SAFE CAC!

Over the past four years, Kaitlyn has worn many hats and made a difference in so many lives. She first joined our team as our Intake Coordinator and was trained to serve as a backup Forensic Interviewer. Last spring, Kaitlyn stepped into her current role as Family Advocate, where she now has the opportunity to support children and families through some of their most difficult moments.

No matter the role, Kaitlyn brings compassion, patience, and genuine care to everything she does. We are incredibly lucky to have someone so dedicated to the children and families we serve on our team. ❤️

Help us celebrate Kaitlyn and congratulate her on four years with IM SAFE CAC! We appreciate you, Kaitlyn, and all that you do! 🥳🎉

Here is some information to help keep our children safe.🧡 Many times, perpetrators will tell children they NEED to keep what happened (the abuse) a secret.

Let's take a stand by sharing with our children that secrets are not allowed and providing a safe space and/or person is crucial to the healing process.
