When your water breaks this does NOT mean it’s baby time. That is such a common misconception! Membranes can be ruptured for hours, days, weeks, and so on before spontaneous labor ensues. Membranes can even reseal and amniotic fluid replenishes.
💦
When your water breaks prior to labor, this is absolutely not the time to go to the hospital. Do not call to inform a provider. Do not let your midwife know. Most will be required to put you on a 12 hour time cap (which is not science/physiologically based practice). You do not want to be put on that time clock- that’s how you end up in a cesarean surgery.
💦
When your water breaks prior to labor things you should do are:
💦 Take a nap
💦 Go relax
💦 Go for a walk if you desire
💦 Drink water/stay hydrated
💦 Keep everything out of the va**na; toys, pen*ses, others hands, etc
💦 Meditate, relax your mind to allow labor to roll in
💦 Pay attention for signs of infection; fever, sickness, colored discharge, smelly discharge/fluid, and pay attention to fetal movement
Note: It is a myth that after 24 hours of broken waters, that you and your baby are automatically at a significant increased risk for infection. This is what some providers relay, but this is not true when we aren’t putting hands in va**nas in bacteria filled public facilities.
💦
Don’t call a provider, don’t run to the hospital, this will only sabotage a physiological labor and birth. Stay home. If you aren’t home, go home. Stay there until labor contractions are close together and consistent. The less time you spend in the hospital, birth center, or with your provider in your sacred home space, the better. The less time they have to offer their energy, suggestion, and intervention, the less complicated and better off your labor and birth will likely be.
💦
When your waters release, don’t freak out and tell the world. It could be hours- weeks before baby comes, don’t get ahead of yourself! Don’t sabotage your labor! Allow your body and baby to choose their date and time of birth. Do not allow the medical model to put your birth in their one-size-fits-all time frames. Induction isn’t needed with open membranes, patience is!
💦
Have your membranes ever released prior to labor starting? What did you do? How was your experience? How long was your water broken for?
