Mediterranean Diet and Whole-Body Health.

The Mediterranean diet is an eating pattern centered on fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish, olive oil, and whole grains, while limiting red and processed meats, dairy, saturated fats, and refined sugars. It has been associated with a reduced risk of early death, cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, cognitive decline, and several types of cancer. A recent literature review found that several biological processes help explain these benefits, including improvements in cholesterol levels, better blood sugar control, reduced inflammation and cell damage, healthier blood vessels, and a lower tendency for blood to clot.

Simple Habits Can Help Reduce Constipation.

Tufts University researchers note that increasing fiber intake, drinking adequate fluids, maintaining regular physical activity, and establishing consistent bathroom routines can significantly improve bowel regularity. However, individuals suffering from persisted or severe symptoms should be evaluated by their healthcare provider to rule out underlying conditions.

Cold Weather Poses Greater Risk to Heart Health Than Heat.

While heat waves often come to mind when considering the impact of temperature on cardiovascular health, researchers report that 1 in 16 heart-related deaths are associated with cold exposure, compared to just 1 in 300 linked to heat. Experts point to the effects of low temperatures—particularly their ability to raise blood pressure and increase cardiac workload to maintain body heat—as key drivers of heart attack and stroke risk during colder weather.

Heart Rate Zones.

Heart rate zones reflect exercise intensity as a percentage of maximum heart rate (220 minus age) and indicate how hard the body is working, with each zone associated with different benefits. Zone 1 (50–60%) promotes recovery and circulation; Zone 2 (60–70%) supports fat burning and cardiovascular health; Zone 3 (70–80%) improves endurance; Zone 4 (80–90%) builds speed and performance; and Zone 5 (90–100%) enhances peak performance.

Sitting Time and Dementia Risk.

Excessive sitting time is often associated with an increased risk of poor outcomes, including dementia. However, a recent study suggests that not all sitting time is equal, with passive activities—such as watching TV—linked to a higher risk of cognitive decline, while cognitively engaging activities like reading or solving puzzles may have a protective effect on brain health.
