If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be? Maybe it’s overcoming the disease of addiction, being more disciplined at the gym, or finally making a change you’ve been putting off for years.

Change starts with recognizing where you are and where you want to be. But knowing you want something different and actually taking the steps to get there are two very different things.

Understanding the stages of change can help us recognize where we are in the process and what it takes to move forward. ❤️

Addiction Recovery: How Small Choices Lead to Big Changes

When you're working to rebuild your life, it's easy to focus on the big things you want back. But lasting change often starts with the smallest decisions.

James Sweasy recalls being asked why making his bed mattered when he had much bigger goals, including getting his car, house, job, and company back, and eventually owning a beach house. The response challenged him to recognize the disconnect between wanting to reclaim those responsibilities and refusing to complete one simple task.

He was given a choice: accept the expectations or leave. James chose to make his bed.

Recovery requires more than wanting life to be different. It takes accountability, consistency, and a willingness to do the work, even when the steps seem small or insignificant. Those daily choices can help rebuild discipline, restore trust, and create a foundation for lasting change.

Alcoholism and the Progression of Addiction: Jay Davidson’s Story

Addiction doesn't always look the same from one stage to the next. Sometimes, the habits change, but the underlying struggle continues.

Jay Davidson reflects on how his drinking evolved, moving from moonshine, known as White Lightning, to b**r because it was easier to get. Over time, he developed a preference for Courvoisier and Scotch. Even the image of these drinks in movies, where they were portrayed as sophisticated and distinguished, played a role in their appeal.

But addiction goes deeper than what someone chooses to drink. It's also important to understand the experiences, emotions, and possible trauma that may contribute to unhealthy patterns over time.

Understanding those underlying factors can be an important part of recovery, helping people address more than the substance use itself.

High-Functioning Alcoholism: When Success Hides a Drinking Problem

You can be successful at work, trusted by others, and still be struggling with alcoholism.

During his military career, Jay Davidson was a high-performing soldier who continued advancing through the ranks, earning promotions from First Lieutenant to Captain and then Major ahead of many of his peers. He became known as a “fixer,” often assigned to struggling units because of his ability to identify problems and turn things around.

Because his career was going so well and his evaluations were consistently positive, Jay didn't believe his drinking was a problem. He saw himself as a functioning drunk who could keep alcohol and his responsibilities separate.

But success doesn't mean addiction isn't affecting your life. Alcoholism doesn't always look the way people expect, and being able to perform at work doesn't mean everything is okay.

Recognizing the problem is an important step toward recovery, even when life looks successful from the outside.

Jay Davidson: Leadership, Decision-Making, and Addiction Recovery

Sometimes, leadership means making the difficult call when everyone else wants to go in a different direction.

While serving in the military, Jay Davidson faced a situation where his unit encountered a potentially dangerous distraction during a patrol break. Drawing on the leadership training he received at Officer Candidate School, he recognized the risks and ordered his men to move out in the opposite direction.

That moment highlights the importance of thinking clearly under pressure, recognizing risky situations, and making decisions that protect yourself and others.

Those same skills matter in addiction recovery. Learning to recognize triggers, step away from harmful situations, and make healthier choices can help build a stronger foundation for lasting recovery.

💚 Watching Growth Makes It All Worth It

One of the most rewarding parts of what we do at Findlay Recovery Center is watching our clients grow, gain confidence, and slowly come out of their shells.

Sometimes, growth happens in the smallest moments. It’s seeing someone begin to believe in themselves again, open up to others, celebrate a personal milestone, or discover strengths they didn’t know they had.

🌱 Watching confidence grow.
💚 Seeing hope return.
🤝 Celebrating the courage to keep going.
✨ Witnessing someone become a healthier, stronger version of themselves.

These moments remind us why recovery matters. Every person’s journey looks different, and progress doesn't happen overnight. But getting to witness those changes and cheer our clients on along the way is a privilege we never take for granted.

At Findlay Recovery Center, your growth matters to us. We’re proud to walk alongside you as you discover what’s possible and build a future you can feel good about. 💚

Jay Davidson: Alcoholism, Life-Changing Decisions, and the Road Ahead

Sometimes, looking back on our lives helps us recognize just how much alcohol influenced our decisions.

On November 22, 1963, the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Jay Davidson was in a basement drinking moonshine with his mother and stepfather to build up the courage to go through with his wedding. Looking back, he questions whether getting married that day was the right decision.

Afterward, Jay moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he worked for General Motors. Eventually, a military draft notice arrived while he was still struggling with alcoholism.

Alcohol can become so deeply woven into our lives that it begins influencing major decisions, relationships, and the direction we take. Recognizing those patterns is an important step toward understanding addiction and making lasting changes.

Jay Davidson: Family, Unexpected Turns, and Life’s Biggest Moments

Life doesn't always follow the timeline we plan. Jay Davidson was scheduled to begin Officer Candidate School on June 1, but in the third week of May, an urgent Red Cross call changed everything. His wife was going into premature labor, and he needed to get to Fort Benning, Georgia, immediately.

By the time Jay arrived at the hospital, his son, Eric, had already been born.

Life can change in an instant, bringing unexpected responsibilities and emotions. In recovery, learning to navigate life's challenges and show up for the people who matter most can become a powerful part of building a healthier future.
