August is Immunization Awareness Month so Rolling Hills will be sharing information that you need to know to keep your pet safe from dangerous diseases and infections.

“💉 The Bordetella vaccine protects dogs from infectious tracheobronchitis — commonly known as kennel cough — and it’s important for all dogs, not just those who board.

Even though ‘kennel’ is in the name, this respiratory infection spreads anywhere dogs share air or surfaces. Bordetella bacteria can travel through:
• Airborne droplets from coughing or sneezing
• Shared environments like sidewalks, parks, mailboxes, grooming tables, pet‑friendly stores
• Contaminated surfaces, where the bacteria can survive hours to days depending on temperature and humidity
• Indirect contact, meaning dogs don’t need to touch noses or play together to be exposed. You may never even see the infected dog that gets your pet sick.

💉 The Lyme vaccine is strongly recommended for dogs who live in or visit tick‑prone areas — including right here in Maryland. 🦀

Lyme disease is transmitted through the bite of infected deer ticks and can cause joint pain, fever, lethargy, and long‑term kidney complications. Even dogs who only go outside to potty or go on short walks can be exposed.

Why Lyme vaccination matters:
• Maryland is a high‑risk region for Lyme‑carrying ticks
• Ticks can be picked up in grass, leaf litter, woods, or even your own backyard
• Lyme disease can cause chronic joint issues and serious kidney disease

Say hello to Gus, Rolling Hills' newest little Shar‑Pei patient!

🐶 He wasn’t feeling his best today, so he came to see Dr. Anna this morning. He just seems to have a case of GI upset, so Dr. Anna prescribed some antinausea medication and SQ fluids to help him feel back to his normal puppy-self! During his treatments, Gus made himself VERY comfortable snuggling up on our lead Veterinary Assistant, Katie. Scroll to see! 😂👉🏼

We are happy to report that Gus appears to be already on the mend and is cute as a button! 🥰

August is Immunization Awareness Month so Rolling Hills will be sharing information that you need to know to keep your pet safe from dangerous diseases and infections.

💉 Leptospirosis is a core vaccine — recommended for all dogs, regardless of lifestyle.

Lepto is a bacteria spread through the urine of wildlife and can contaminate soil, puddles, standing water, and even your own yard. Dogs don’t need to swim, hike, or roam to be exposed.

Why it’s considered core:
• It’s zoonotic — meaning it can infect humans
• Found in urban, suburban, and rural environments
• Spread through contaminated water, soil, and surfaces
• Can cause kidney and liver failure if untreated

Because Lepto can be picked up in nearly every environment both city, suburban, and rural, vaccination is essential for every dog.
