Society teaches us how to handle pain long before we ever really understand it, through what we see modeled, what gets praised, and what gets quietly discouraged. For a lot of chronic pain sufferers, that lesson is “Smile through it. Don't be a burden. Don't let people see.”

It makes sense - being vocal about pain can feel risky: to relationships, to how people see you, and sometimes even to your job. So people learn to carry it quietly instead.

But the more we normalize being honest about pain, the more we chip away at that expectation. That starts in our personal relationships, making space for people to say "I'm not okay today" without it changing how we treat them. And it also means supporting the bigger, systemic changes that make it safer for people to be open about what they're carrying, at work and beyond.

This Pain Awareness Month, we honor the people who carry more than most of us will ever know, and renew our commitment to provide love and support.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a reminder that a single diagnosis can turn a family's world upside down overnight.

This situation isn’t one parents typically prepare for – they are usually thrust into it, often while juggling treatment schedules, medical bills, and the emotional weight of a child's illness.

Research shows just how heavy that weight can be. A recent study on pediatric cancer caregivers, covered by Cancer Therapy Advisor, found that families raising a child through cancer treatment carry significantly higher rates of financial hardship — not just the cost of care itself, but the harder-to-see toll: delaying their own medical or mental health care, and carrying constant worry about how to keep up. And these families aren't rare: an estimated 15,000 children are diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. every year, which means thousands of families are navigating this exact shift right now.

This month, organizations like Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation are working to lighten that load. Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation funds pediatric cancer research and support programs for families. For all of September, their Million Mile challenge invites anyone, anywhere, to walk, run, cycle, swim, or move however they can to help fund the fight. No fundraising minimum, no experience required — just a willingness to go the extra mile (literally) for kids fighting cancer.

To every caregiver navigating a childhood cancer diagnosis right now: we see the weight you're carrying, and we're grateful for organizations working to lighten it.

The CDC reports almost 1 in 4 US adults have chronic pain (CDC, 2023). This pain awareness month, we asked the Guardian Care support team: What’s one thing you wish more people understood about living with chronic pain?

A colleague answered: “I wish more people understood that loving someone with chronic pain means constantly adjusting your expectations without ever wanting to make them feel like a burden. You can be deeply compassionate and still feel sad, frustrated, worried, or helpless. Those feelings don’t mean you love them less, they mean you’re human too.”

What’s one thing you wish people knew about living with chronic pain?

Alzheimer’s and related dementias introduce a number of challenging symptoms, including impulsive behavior, trouble recognizing loved ones and severe challenges with communication.

But did you know many people experiencing a dementia commonly struggle to swallow and eat? Not necessarily a symptom of the disease itself, but a side effect of common medications.

The journey of life often sees us reverting to the needs we had when we were first born.

What’s something you were surprised to learn about Alzheimer's disease or other related dementias?

September is Pain Awareness month, and we asked the Guardian Care support team, “What’s one thing you wish more people understood about living with chronic pain?”

A colleague answered: “Chronic pain takes over your life. A lot of people living with it don’t say anything and suffer in silence... it’s not the best way to handle it, but you learn that people don’t want to hear you complain. Understand - the limits people have on things they can do is survival not laziness. The extreme fatigue that can come with it comes from days of carrying weight that is too heavy and which you feel you have no choice but to carry. At the end of the day they have nothing left, yet they get up and do it again the next day. I think some respect for just the daily life of how much gets accomplished despite the pain is also important.”

Learning from others’ experiences is one of the first steps to expand our capacity better support those with chronic pain.
