Are you noticing hot flashes and night sweats are worse with certain things that you are eating? Start paying attention ladies! I know I certainly have been noticing it for myself. If I even eat two tiny potatoes, I'm toast for the rest of the night now.

This is new and not fun.

It's always a moving target between weight, hormone balance, diet, exercise, nutrition....ugh....

Seriously some research suggests that diets high in refined carbohydrates may be associated with more frequent or severe vasomotor symptoms, such as hot flashes and night sweats, during menopause. Refined carbohydrates—including foods like white bread, pastries, sugary cereals, candy, and sweetened beverages—can cause rapid increases and decreases in blood glucose levels. These fluctuations may influence insulin and other hormones involved in regulating body temperature, potentially contributing to hot flashes in some individuals.

In contrast, diets that emphasize complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables, provide more stable blood sugar levels and are associated with better overall metabolic health. Some studies have found that dietary patterns rich in fiber, whole plant foods, and healthy fats, such as the Mediterranean diet, may be linked to fewer menopausal symptoms, although the evidence is not entirely consistent.

Overall, choosing high-fiber, minimally processed carbohydrates while limiting refined sugars may help reduce vasomotor symptoms for some women and also supports health during the menopausal transition.

Natural D-Hist® is a targeted blend of flavonoids, antioxidants, proteolytic enzymes and botanicals designed to provide comprehensive support for seasonal challenges
caused by common environmental allergens. Natural D-Hist® includes quercetin, a powerful flavonoid, to support healthy histamine levels. Bromelain enhances the absorption of quercetin and supports mucosal tissue health.

Some days are tough around the office and so we try to write a few tiny things on our board that we are grateful for around here to remind us about the good things in life.

Taking a few moments to write down what we are grateful for can have a powerful impact on the way we experience each day. Gratitude helps shift our attention from what is missing to what is already present, reminding us that even during difficult seasons, there are moments, people, and opportunities worth appreciating.

Writing our gratitude down makes it more intentional. Thoughts can come and go, but putting them on paper encourages us to slow down and reflect. Over time, these written reminders become a record of blessings we might otherwise forget. Looking back on them can provide encouragement during challenging times and help us recognize how much we have grown.

Whether it's a kind word from a friend, a beautiful sunrise, good health, or simply the chance to begin a new day, every expression of gratitude is an opportunity to appreciate life's gifts. By making gratitude a daily practice, we train our hearts and minds to notice the good, creating a foundation for greater joy, resilience, and peace.

Today is national avocado day. We need to celebrate the deliciousness and benefits of our green little friends and understand how they are important for us.

❤️ Heart health ❤️ - Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fat, low in sodium, high in potassium, which can help:
*Lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol when they replace saturated fats.
*Maintain or increase HDL ("good") cholesterol.
*Support healthy blood vessel function.

🌾 High in fiber 🌾
One medium avocado provides about 10–14 grams of fiber, which can:
*Promote regular bowel movements.
*Support a healthy gut microbiome.
*Increase feelings of fullness.
*Help stabilize blood sugar after meals.

🍎 Nutrient absorption 🍎

The healthy fats in avocados improve the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and antioxidants from other foods, including:
*Vitamin A
*Vitamin D
*Vitamin E
*Vitamin K
*Carotenoids like beta-carotene and lycopene

👓 Eye health 👓

Avocados contain the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, which accumulate in the retina and are associated with a lower risk of age-related eye diseases.

Fiber.

Our memory might be of our grandparents stirring up some good 'ol Metamucil in their morning orange juice (at least that was my memory) and how gross it seemed. It also just seemed like it was only meant for those over 70 years old.

But fiber is important to all of us at any age. It helps our detoxification through regular bowel movements and also huge for gut health which I cannot emphasize enough.

Fiber overall helps with lowering risk for cardiovascular events like stroke, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and even cancers like colorectal, gastric and breast cancer. It also bulks the stool and reduced inflammation and can help out the gut and a lovely little bacteria in the gut called Faecalibacterium prausnitzii.

Soluble fiber is what can help in lowering our cardiovascular risk and insoluble fibers are what help out the gut. As confusing sometimes as that sounds, the stool bulking fibers which one should think are insoluble-are actually soluble because they dissolve in water. The more you know!

Men.
I love you.
But please stop ordering from online companies that you list your symptoms to in which you get a crazy Frankensteined combo pill for three times the cost.

If I don't know you are struggling with other symptoms, I cannot help you. I know, I know...I'm a lady and it can be embarrassing... but getting help from AI on the other end and a phantom prescriber and an unknown compounding pharmacy = getting ripped off.

Let me help you. We all struggle, nothing is ever embarrassing . I've heard it all. Trust me, working in the operating room for most of my career, I've seen it all, extracted strange things from rectums and vaginas seen hidden things/tattoos on people. That's another story for another day.

I cannot say what compan(ies) I am talking about. But you know. You are sitting in your recliner watching tv and an ad pops up for "She/He" and you can order from the convenience of your couch some "personalized" concoction to help you with your problem.

This rears it's head from time to time and I'm like ummm what are you taking? It will be some random dose of two-three medications combined together in one magic pill to help. Now I love compounding pharmacies, but they are not all alike and some aren't the greatest. You don't know about their testing, their potency, and their efficacy. You also don't know about the dose of each separate medication crammed into one pill for convenience. Then there is the subscription to the company that you pay a monthly fee to.

I've seen this with weight loss medications, weird combinations of off label medications combined with high dose diabetic medications that can just exacerbate GI side effects. I've seen this with all kinds of erectile medications. I've seen anti-depressant medications combined with weird strengths to control cholesterol. Like what?

Let me tell you this:
1.) If your insurance didn't cover something for erectile dysfunction, the out of pocket cost for me sending it to CVS/Walgreens/Meijer/Kroger is like less than $10.

2.) Or we could spin things separately for cheaper to see what actually works and THEN possibly get it compounded locally for convenience through a trusted partner.

We all strive to look younger and one thing people have been asking me lately is: "is it crazy to put estrogen cream on my face?" I order this for women all the time. It's amazing.

No it's not remotely crazy and it's encouraged in the correct form and concoction.

I work with loads of trusted compounding pharmacies that I'm lucky to be wedged in between physically here in Fishers, as well as, out of state.

But there are some sweet concoctions that ladies have been raving about from our local sources that contain beautiful things: Estriol (a weaker estrogen with greater affinity for tightening and moisture), Argirelox and GHK-Cu a tri-peptide.

1. Estriol has the strongest evidence in postmenopausal women. Studies have found it can:

Increase epidermal thickness
Improve skin hydration
Increase elasticity
Reduce fine wrinkles
Improve overall skin quality after 2–3 months of consistent use

2. Argirelox is a peptide complex (derived from Argireline technology) designed to work similarly to topical neuromodulating peptides (like Botox).

Potential benefits include:

Reduction in forehead lines
Softer crow's feet
Less pronounced frown lines
Smoother appearance during facial expressions

Unlike injectable botulinum toxin, it does not paralyze muscles. Instead, it may modestly reduce neurotransmitter release involved in muscle contraction, producing subtler wrinkle-softening effects with continued use. Clinical effects are generally milder than Botox.

3. GHK-Cu is one of the better-studied cosmetic peptides and may:

Stimulate collagen types I and III
Increase elastin production
Improve firmness
Enhance wound healing
Improve skin texture
Reduce inflammation
Support antioxidant activity

Ladies, why are we getting fat when menopause comes knocking?

I get asked this on a daily basis. I hear "I am not eating much and working out and I'm gaining weight what seems exponentially.) What. The. Hell.

Now, I am not a wizard. Some might think I am, but let me tell you, if I had a magic elixir that worked on everyone to help the most common issues I hear about all day: energy, fatigue, sleep and weight, I would swallow it myself first and then I would charge a million dollars for it. Just kidding. Or not....

But as our body ages and your estrogen and progesterone drops and our compensatory FSH rises, it signals our body to unfortunately produce visceral fat. And it often surrounds the abdominal area and we get our undesirable pooch.

What can we do about this?

1.) Hormone replacement WITH targeted muscle mass maintenance/gain AND being more active.

2.)The Mediterranean Diet has the most important data for weight loss in menopause.

3.) Sometimes we do have to try GLP-1s to aid as a tool to teach us about our eating habits that might have gotten progressively worse through the years that we can't ignore now anymore.

4.) There is no one smoking gun to stop this unfortunately, it's about us working together and coming up with a plan that helps you lose weight, feel better and stay healthy 😀
