Working at the Thunder Over Flagstaff air show tomorrow. The Scouts got to fly before setting up camp nearby. We'll be up early serving breakfast and lunch!

THROWBACK THURSDAY: One of the first “Badges of Merit” later renamed “Merit Badges” in 1911, was Stalker. Later renamed Stalking Merit Badge, it challenged Scouts to track animals and even people by following tracks. A Scout was expected to know a variety of tracks of different animals. When tracking people they were expected to use the tracks to determine if the person was likely to be male or female, older or younger, and know their gait based on the spacing of the track. They would use their skills to track down animals, and take pictures as evidence that they had been able to sneak up on the critter. The original Badge of Merit was known as Stalker from 1910-1911, then renamed Stalking Merit Badge from 1911-1952. In 2010, the Centennial Year for the BSA, a handful of original Merit Badges were brought back for that one year as part of the celebration of 100 years of the BSA. Stalking Merit Badge was one of these selected, although due to changes in connotation of the word it was brought back as “Tracking Merit Badge”.

Last MBM was the Tracking Merit Badge. This Historic Merit Badge could be earned only during calendar year 2010, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. It was first offered in 1911 and discontinued in 1952.
