New World Screwworm | Stay Alert!
New world screwworm (NWS) is a fly that lays eggs in open wounds and body openings in animals and sometimes people. Eggs turn to large (maggots) that dig into and feed on living tissue within 12-24 hours, leading to painful wounds. The larvae feeds for 3-7 days before dropping to the ground and burrowing into soil. An adult fly emerges. Only flies can spread NWS.

NWS animal cases have been reported in Texas and New Mexico, with cases continuing to rise in Texas. View USDA dashboard at https://ow.ly/19ss50ZoymX.

โ–ช Open wounds that worsen or do not heal
โ–ช Visible larvae/maggots

โ–ช Swelling, discharge, or foul odor
โ–ช Restlessness, isolation, or unusual behavior
