Dry Drunk Explained: Signs, Causes, and How to Move From Sobriety to Recovery

A “dry drunk” is someone who has stopped using alcohol or drugs but still shows the thinking patterns, emotional responses, and behaviors tied to active addiction—such as anger, resentment, denial, and poor coping. Understanding this pattern matters because abstinence alone does not equal recovery.

For young men who need structured, long-term support to close that gap, Back2Basics Recovery’s residential treatment program pairs clinical therapy with outdoor adventure and real-world life-skills training in Flagstaff, Arizona.

The Work Looks Like This
A weekend on the road - trading routine for something a little different.

From setting up camp at Apache Lake to hiking Vineyard Trail and cooling off at Roosevelt Lake, the weekend was filled with movement, teamwork, and time to reset. Meals were cooked together, trails were tackled, and each night ended the same way, around the fire, slowing things down.

On the way back, we made one last stop to camp, reflect, and connect - talking through the weekend, the highs, the challenges, and what we’re taking with us moving forward.

These trips are about more than where we go.
They’re about how we show up, for ourselves and for each other.

A Mother’s Role in Recovery: A Son’s Perspective on Healing Relationships

In honor of Mother’s this month, it’s important to recognize the profound role mothers play in the recovery journey—and how those relationships can evolve over time.

At Back2Basics Outdoor Adventure Recovery, one of the most meaningful transformations we see is not only within the individual, but within the family dynamic—especially between mothers and their sons. To better understand this, we asked one of our alumni to reflect on how his relationship with his mother has changed since achieving sobriety.

Financial Literacy: A Critical Step Toward Long-Term Recovery

Recovery from substance abuse is often discussed in terms of therapy, counseling and sobriety. While those elements are essential, long-term recovery also requires rebuilding the practical skills needed to navigate everyday life. One of the most important, and often overlooked, components is financial literacy.

For many young adults in recovery, addiction disrupts education, employment and financial stability. Learning how to manage money, build healthy spending habits and plan for the future becomes an essential step toward independence and long-term success. Read more,

I learned how to use my voice here. Speaking up didn’t come naturally to me, but getting honest feedback and learning how to grow from it helped more than I expected.

I started accepting the things I can’t change and focusing on what I can. Even camping, which was really hard at first, became something I looked forward to after that first month. It pushed me outside my comfort zone in a good way. - Resident
