When in doubt, please reach out! Recently, I had an exclusively pumping, amazing new mom, reach out to me concerned about a “clogged duct” that wasn’t resolving and persistent for a week. No fever, no real pain, but couldn’t seem to get it to go away. She sent a picture along and right away I told her to call her doctor because I suspected an abscess. The mama ended up feeling pretty crummy the next day and ended up visiting the ER for ultrasound and bloodwork. It was in fact two abscesses and needed to be drained by a breast surgeon. She is now on antibiotics and resting. Please reach out to an IBCLC sooner rather than later if something isn’t feeling right. Can anyone guess how much fluid was removed total? Wishing this mama a speedy recovery and sending love to her. She’s worked so hard to feed her baby. * I got permission to share from this mom to help any other moms out there.
