Congratulations to our latest DAISY Award winner, Erica Graska, RN-PCU!

The DAISY Award is an international program that recognizes nurses for the extraordinary compassionate care they provide to patients and families. Erica's nomination highlighted what so many already know...her kindness, exceptional bedside manner, and commitment to making patients feel comfortable, heard, and cared for during some of their most vulnerable moments.

Erica joined Hurley Medical Center in January 2026 and brought with her more than 15 years of healthcare experience as a medical assistant. Becoming a nurse had always been her goal, driven by a deep passion for caring for others.

"I always felt called to care for people. I just wanted to treat others the way I would want my family treated, especially during the most vulnerable moments in their lives," Erica shared.

As a nurse on Hurley's Progressive Care Unit (PCU), Erica embraces the opportunity to learn, grow, and build meaningful connections with her patients every day. Her compassion and dedication shine through in every interaction, making a lasting impact on those she serves.

Thank you, Erica, for living Hurley's mission and providing the exceptional care that makes such a difference for our patients and families. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!

What an incredible day for our Hurley Children's Hospital CMN Champion, Oakley!

Recently, Oakley and her family were invited to celebrate another amazing Children's Miracle Network Hospitals campaign month with our friends at Costco in Midland. During their visit, they received a special behind-the-scenes tour, decorated a cake, made a pizza, and enjoyed thoughtful gifts while learning more about Costco's unwavering commitment to helping local children and families.

🎳 Bowlathon 2026 was one for the books! 🎳

As we celebrated 35 incredible years of coming together in support of Hurley Children's Hospital, the energy, excitement, and generosity were truly unforgettable.

From our amazing community partners and dedicated Hurley team members to supportive friends and family, every lane was filled with people making a difference. One of the highlights of the day was seeing some of our incredible Hurley Miracle Kids alongside Miracle Alumni who continue to give back and show their love for Hurley year after year. ❤️

Congratulations to our newest TULIP Award winner, Joann Stocker! 🌷

Joann may have joined the Hurley team just last year, but she has already made an incredible impact on patients, families, and staff as a member of our Environmental Services team on 6 East Rehabilitation.

With more than a decade of experience and a passion for caring for others, Joann approaches every task with heart, pride, and purpose. She believes excellence is found in the details, treating every patient room as if it were her own home and leading by example for those around her.

Her nomination highlighted her dedication to patient safety and exceptional service, noting her willingness to immediately step in and help during a situation involving shattered glass in a patient room, ensuring the area was completely safe for everyone involved. She is also known for her prompt response to room cleanings, helping reduce wait times and improving the patient experience.

The TULIP Award recognizes healthcare professionals who go above and beyond to make a lasting, positive impact through compassion, dedication, and excellence. Joann embodies all of these qualities and more.

From the sidelines to the operating room, Dr. Travis Baes is dedicated to helping patients get back to doing what they love most. 🏃‍♂️⚾🏈

As a skilled orthopedic surgeon at Hurley Medical Center, Dr. Baes specializes in Orthopedic Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine, bringing advanced expertise and compassionate care to athletes and active individuals throughout our community.

A graduate of Central Michigan University College of Medicine, Dr. Baes completed his residency right here in Flint, building strong roots in the very community he now proudly serves. His extensive training, leadership roles during medical school and residency, and dedication to research and education all reflect his commitment to excellence in orthopedic care.

Beyond the clinic and operating room, Dr. Baes has also been involved in sports coverage for professional and collegiate teams, giving him firsthand experience in diagnosing and treating sports-related injuries at every level of competition.

At Hurley, we’re proud to have physicians like Dr. Baes helping patients move better, recover stronger, and return to the activities they enjoy most.

When it matters most, expertise matters. And at Hurley Children’s Hospital, that expertise is right here for our youngest patients.

Dr. Emily N. Schapka is a Pediatric Critical Care specialist, providing advanced life-saving care for children, from fragile newborns to growing adolescents. Her work is at the heart of the highly specialized care families rely on every day in our region’s only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

Dr. Schapka earned her degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, graduating cm laude, before going on to complete medical school at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria. She continued her training with a pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University, followed by a Pediatric Critical Care Medicine fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

She has been recognized for her excellence and dedication, including being named Resident Teacher of the Month at Children’s Hospital of Richmond, receiving the Ashok & Ingrid Sarnaik Foundation Research Travel Grant in 2024, and earning board certification from the American Board of Pediatrics.

Dr. Schapka’s dedication goes beyond medicine, she’s committed to advancing care, mentoring future physicians, and bringing compassion to every bedside.

Outside the hospital, Dr. Schapka loves being outdoors and staying active. She spends much of her free time hiking, camping, rock climbing, and skiing, often planning vacations around her next outdoor adventure.

At Hurley Children’s Hospital, it’s doctors like Dr. Schapka who make sure families never have to go far for world-class pediatric care. 💙

Their courage, dedication, and ultimate sacrifice made possible the freedoms we cherish every day ...the freedom to live, work, care for others, and build stronger communities.

Today, we remember and express our heartfelt gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. Their legacy of service and selflessness will never be forgotten.

🚑 This week, during National EMS Week, Hurley Medical Center had the privilege of celebrating the incredible EMS teams we’re honored to work alongside every day.

Around the clock, 365 days a year, these dedicated professionals answer the call when seconds matter most. To show our appreciation, we hosted our annual cookout as a small way to recognize the tireless work, commitment, and compassion they bring to our community, even making sure our 3rd shift crews were included with some late night grilling!

A huge THANK YOU to our EMS partners for providing lifesaving care, showing up when people need you most, and serving our community with dedication and heart. Your work never stops, and neither does our gratitude. ❤️🚑
