👄 Let’s practice /m/ and /n/ with Communi-Pro!

These sounds both use your voice and let air flow through your nose. The difference is where your mouth moves!

💋 /m/: Bring your lips together. Try “mmm,” “moo,” and “more.”

👅 /n/: Place your tongue tip just behind your upper front teeth. Try “nnn,” “no,” and “nose.”

🪞 Practice together in a mirror! Model the sound slowly, keep it playful, and celebrate your child’s attempts. 💙

This week’s Communi-Pro activity turns toy bus play into opportunities to practice sounds, words, and turn-taking! 💬

🚦 Model action words: “go,” “stop,” and “drive.”
🚌 Practice the /b/ sound in “bus.”
🎶 Sing “Wheels on the Bus” together.
⏸️ Say “Ready, set…” and pause so your child can join in with a word, gesture, or AAC device!

Wondering whether your child’s communication is on track? 💬

Children develop at different rates, but you don’t have to wait if you have concerns. If your child is using few words, isn’t combining words, has difficulty following simple directions, or isn’t using gestures to communicate, a speech-language evaluation can help you understand what support they may need.

Try a quick sound experiment together! Say “pat” and “bat” while your child rests a hand on their throat. Both sounds start with the lips pressed together, but /b/ makes a buzz when your voice turns on. Did they feel it? 🐝

What communication skills can you expect around age 3? 🗣️✨

Many 3-year-olds are beginning to:

🔹 Use phrases containing three or more words
🔹 Use a growing vocabulary
🔹 Be understood by familiar listeners most of the time
🔹 Ask and answer a variety of “wh” questions
🔹 Use grammatical forms such as “-ing” verbs and possessive “-s”

Every child develops at their own pace, and milestones are general guidelines—not a pass-or-fail checklist. If you have concerns about your child’s speech or language development, an evaluation by a speech-language pathologist can help determine whether additional support is needed.
