Mushrooms Gain Ground in Medicine Despite Limited Clinical Evidence

It's Wellness Wednesday - and here is an interesting article on mushrooms! ๐Ÿ„

Mushrooms have attracted growing interest in nutrition and medicine because their bioactive compounds have anticancer, metabolic, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, neuroprotective, and immunomodulatory effects. ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ„

Mushrooms are rich in water, protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, and also contain compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, and immunomodulatory properties. Nearly 130 therapeutic properties of medicinal mushrooms have been reported. These characteristics have increased interest in their potential applications in nutrition and medicine and have attracted growing attention from biomedical researchers.

The available data support further research into the potential therapeutic applications of mushrooms in pharmaceutical and medical research. However, large-scale, standardized clinical trials are needed because most studies have been conducted in vitro, often using simple protocols, while relatively few in vivo studies are available. Further research is needed to develop more effective methods for extracting and identifying active compounds and to better understand their mechanisms of action. ๐Ÿ„

The Science Behind Being Kind

MedScape - August 3, 2026

https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/science-behind-being-kind-2026a1000ovc?ecd=WNL_trdalrt_pos1_260804_etid8568753&uac=445044EN&impID=8568753

Here are two examples of studies. In one, people who were randomized to three acts of kindness a week had lower levels of anxiety and higher levels of self-esteem. In the other, they randomized two groups. One was to give a gift before and one didnโ€™t give a gift before being put purposely in a stressful situation. The group that gave a gift to someone before being placed in that stressful situation had more rapid recovery of their elevated pulse and blood pressure than the group who didnโ€™t give a gift. ๐ŸŽ

It turns out thereโ€™s a lot of scientific evidence to support that contention. Being kind lowers oneโ€™s levels of cortisol. The act of kindness actually improves inflammatory markers. Whoa! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Consider including lovingkindness practice in your daily routine:

May I be happy
May I be at peace
May I be filled with lovingkindness
May I have a compassionate heart

6 common sugar substitutes linked to 62% faster memory decline, study finds

Medical News Today - July 21, 2026
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/several-sugar-substitutes-linked-faster-cognitive-decline-thinking-memory-aging

Low-calorie sweeteners and sugar substitutes such as aspartame, saccharin, and xylitol have been used since the early 1900s. Past studies show there may be potential health risks to using sugar substitutes, including cognitive issues.
A new study provides more evidence suggesting a correlation between sugar substitute use and cognitive decline.

Since the 1970s, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has approved six sugar substitutes for food additive use, including saccharin, sucralose, and aspartame, as well as sugar alcohols like xylitol and erythritol, and plant-based sugar substitutes like stevia and monk fruit.

A study published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, in September 2025, now provides more evidence suggesting a correlation between sugar substitute use and cognitive decline.

โ€œA 62% faster decline means that people in the highest group of sweetener consumption experienced cognitive aging at a much quicker pace than expected, which could increase their risk of earlier impairment later in life."

"We desperately need more leaders who are committed to courageous, wholehearted leadership and who are self-aware enough to lead from their hearts, rather than unevolved leaders who lead from hurt and fear." - Brene Brown
