A new school year means more teen drivers on the road.

For many students, driving to school is an exciting milestone, but it's also a big responsibility.

Before heading out each morning, remember:
- Buckle up—every trip, every time.
- Put the phone away before you start driving.
- Obey speed limits, especially in school zones.
- Leave early so you don't feel rushed.
- Stay alert for school buses, cyclists and pedestrians.

Safe choices behind the wheel can help everyone get to school and home safely!

Back to school means school buses will be back on the road!

Whether your child rides the bus or you're sharing the road with one, a few simple reminders can help keep everyone safe.

- Arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes early.
- Stand at least 6 feet from the curb while waiting.
- Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before approaching.
- Look left, right and left again before crossing the street.
- Drivers: Always stop when a school bus has its stop arm extended and red lights are flashing.

Let's work together to make every trip to and from school a safe one!

A day at the beach is a great way to make family memories, but the ocean can change quickly. Before heading into the water, make sure your family knows how to stay safe.

Know how to spot a rip current:
• A narrow channel of choppy or darker water moving away from shore
• A break in the pattern of incoming waves
• Foam, seaweed or debris moving steadily away from the beach

Caught in a rip current? Don’t panic and don’t swim against it. Swim parallel to the shoreline until you’re out of the current, then make your way back to shore. If you can’t escape, float or tread water and wave for help.

Remember:
• Swim near a lifeguard when possible.
• Never swim alone.
• Keep children within arm’s reach around water.
• Check weather and beach conditions before entering the ocean.

A hot car can become deadly in just minutes.

With dangerously hot temperatures across the P*e Dee and Coastal regions this week, it's more important than ever to stay vigilant. Every year, children lose their lives to heatstroke after being left in or gaining access to a vehicle. These tragedies can happen to anyone and are often preventable with simple safety habits.

Take a minute to review these lifesaving reminders and help spread awareness!

The summer heat is here, and temperatures across the P*e Dee and Coastal regions are climbing. Children can become overheated much faster than adults, making it important to recognize the signs of heat-related illness.

Help keep kids safe by:
- Encouraging plenty of water throughout the day
- Dressing them in lightweight, light-colored clothing
- Taking frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning
- Limiting outdoor play during the hottest part of the day (12 p.m. – 6 p.m.)
- Never leaving a child alone in a vehicle, even for a minute

Watch for signs of heat exhaustion or heatstroke, including dizziness, confusion, headache, nausea, hot skin, or unusual tiredness. If you suspect heatstroke, call 911 immediately and begin cooling the child while waiting for help.

A little planning can help your family enjoy a fun and safe summer. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and look out for one another!

Fireworks are a fun Fourth of July tradition, but they can also lead to serious injuries, especially for children.

The safest way to celebrate is by attending a professional fireworks display and leaving fireworks to the experts. If you're celebrating at home, keep children at a safe distance, never allow them to handle or light fireworks, and remember that sparklers can burn at temperatures hot enough to cause severe burns.

Let's work together to keep this Independence Day safe, happy, and injury-free for everyone.
