A special thank you to Tanya for sharing her expertise and to Caitlyn, our Home Health Director, for organizing and leading this valuable training. New World screwworm (NWS) is a parasitic fly that lays eggs in open wounds. The larvae feed on living tissue and can cause wounds that worsen quickly.

What to Watch For:
-Maggots seen in a wound or in a body opening
-Wounds that get worse within a few days
-A strong or foul odor from the wound
-New pain, bleeding, fever, or chills

How to Protect Yourself:
-Keep all wounds clean and covered
-Use insect repellent that is registered with the EPA
-Wear loose clothing that reduces exposed skin
-Sleep indoors with closed or screened windows
-If sleeping outdoors, use a bed net or screened tent
-Treat clothing and gear with 0.5 percent permethrin when possible

If You Think You Have NWS:
-Seek medical care right away
-Do not try to remove maggots on your own
-Do not throw live maggots in the trash or outside because they can spread
