Does mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy reduce inflammation, or do you need higher pressures to create meaningful change?
To help answer that question, we ran our own study and compared mild-pressure HBOT and higher-pressure HBOT by measuring 81 different inflammatory cytokines.
The results were surprising.
Both groups showed statistically significant changes in inflammation markers—but not always the same ones.
Some cytokines responded more strongly to lower-pressure HBOT, while others responded more strongly to higher-pressure HBOT.
The takeaway wasn't that one pressure was "better" than the other.
The takeaway was that different pressures appear to create different biological effects.
This reinforces an important concept in hyperbaric medicine: HBOT exists on a continuum. Rather than forcing every patient into the same protocol, we should be looking at their goals, health concerns, and clinical data to determine which pressure may be the most appropriate for them.
When it comes to inflammation, higher isn't always better. Different pressures may simply produce different outcomes.
