It starts with a cheek swab. 🧬

For some people with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma, a stem cell or bone marrow transplant is the treatment that offers a cure. It requires a donor whose tissue type matches theirs — which is unrelated to blood type, and far more specific.

Only around a third of patients find a match within their own family. Everyone else depends on a stranger on a registry.

Two things people get wrong:
🩸 Most donations aren't surgery. The common method collects stem cells from your bloodstream, similar to giving blood, over a few hours.
🌍 Diversity genuinely matters. Tissue types track with ancestry, so patients from under-represented backgrounds have significantly worse odds of finding a match. More diverse registries save more lives.

For most cancers, a needle sample does the job. For lymphoma, the architecture of the node — how the cells are arranged inside it — is part of the diagnosis. A needle can capture cells but miss the structure.

That's also why results take longer than people expect. Naming the exact subtype decides the entire treatment plan, and there are over 60 of them.

There's a real difference between warm and drenched. 💧

Most night sweats have ordinary explanations: a hot bedroom, menopause or perimenopause, anxiety, alcohol, an infection, sleep apnoea, thyroid changes, or side effects from common medications including some antidepressants.

The kind doctors ask about specifically is different. Drenching sweats — soaking through nightclothes and bedding badly enough that you have to change them — recurring over weeks, often with no fever to explain them.

On their own, even those usually aren't cancer. What raises the question is the combination: drenching night sweats plus unexplained fever plus unexplained weight loss. Together, those three are the pattern clinicians take seriously in lymphoma.

If yours have gone on beyond a few weeks, describe them to your doctor in exactly those terms — how often, how drenching, and what else has changed.

The distinction between Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma comes down to whether a pathologist finds one specific abnormal cell type in your biopsy sample. That single finding reshapes the entire treatment plan.

You have hundreds of lymph nodes. Most people couldn't say what they do. 💚

They're part of your lymphatic system — a network running through your entire body that filters fluid and carries lymphocytes, the white blood cells that fight infection.

Lymphoma begins when those lymphocytes grow out of control. Because lymph tissue exists almost everywhere, lymphoma can start almost anywhere.

Today marks World Lymphoma Awareness Day, established in 2004 by the Lymphoma Coalition to improve symptom recognition and early diagnosis. This year's campaign is "Navigating Lymphoma and CLL Together."

This is the myth that costs people time. 🚩

Blood in the urine — visible as red, pink, or tea-coloured — is the single most common warning sign of bladder cancer. And here's the part that catches people out: it's usually painless, and it often disappears for weeks before returning.

That disappearance feels like reassurance. It isn't.

Most of the time the cause is something else entirely: a urinary tract infection, a kidney stone, certain medications, hard exercise. Those are far more likely. But every one of them still needs a doctor to say so.

One episode is enough to warrant an appointment. Not a panic — an appointment.
