“How does that make you feel?”
It’s one of the most recognized phrases associated with counseling. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the most misunderstood.
We’ve made jokes about it. We’ve seen it exaggerated on television and in movies and reduced to a stereotype of what therapists say. But beneath the stereotype is one of the most powerful questions a person can be asked.
When was the last time someone asked how an experience affected you emotionally? Not what you thought about it, explained away, or pushed through, but how it actually made you feel?
Many of us have become skilled at analyzing our emotions without ever truly connecting to them. We intellectualize our feelings instead of experiencing them. We rationalize them, and talk around them. We can explain exactly why we feel the way we do without ever truly allowing ourselves to feel it.
That simple question invites us to slow down, step out of our heads, and reconnect with what is happening inside of us. It asks us to pay attention to the part of ourselves that is often overlooked while we’re busy coping, performing, achieving, or simply trying to make it through the day.
Taking a moment to pause, reflect, and acknowledge what you’re feeling can be a powerful step toward healing and growth.
What might change if you became more connected to what you feel?
If you’re looking for a nonjudgmental space to process life’s challenges and reconnect with yourself, we’re here to help.
