June is Men’s Mental Health Month.

Many men have been taught how to provide, protect, and persevere. Fewer have been taught how to talk about anxiety, grief, loneliness, burnout, or depression.

Checking on the men in our lives should involve more than asking, “How’s work?”

A meaningful conversation can change someone’s day and sometimes their life.

What is one piece of advice you would give a young man about protecting his mental health?

June is PTSD Awareness Month…

One thing we’ve learned throughout our work is that trauma does not always look the way people expect it to. Sometimes it shows up as anger, isolation, perfectionism, substance use, difficulty trusting others, or simply staying busy enough to avoid thinking about painful experiences.

Many people are carrying stories they have never told and wounds they have never fully addressed.

Recovery and healing are possible, but awareness is the first step.

What is one thing you wish more people understood about trauma and PTSD?

Grateful to have attended the Peer Recovery Support Specialist Program Site/Site Supervisor Summit at Governors State University.

It’s always great to connect with others who are passionate about strengthening the peer workforce and improving support for those doing this important work. We appreciated the opportunity to share perspectives, learn from colleagues, and discuss ways we can continue to enhance the field.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the event possible.

The Illinois Department of Public Health recently issued a health advisory regarding emerging substances in the unregulated drug supply, including cychlorphine, a synthetic opioid reported to be significantly more potent than fentanyl, and “pink co***ne” (tusi/tucibi), a dangerous mixture that may contain ketamine, M**A, co***ne, methamphetamine, and opioids. IDPH is encouraging providers, first responders, harm reduction organizations, and communities to remain alert for unpredictable overdose presentations and to continue carrying/administering naloxone.

This is another reminder that today’s overdose response environment is becoming increasingly complex and polysubstance-driven.

🗣️Happy EMS WEEK May 17-23, 2026🥳

We couldn’t let the week end without honoring EMS professionals who have played a powerful role in reversing overdoses and connecting individuals to life-saving care. Through rapid naloxone administration, trauma-informed response, and coordination with hospitals and harm reduction services, they’ve helped bend the curve and save thousands of lives.

To all EMT’s, paramedics, dispatchers, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and all other emergency responders:

Your hands have carried hope. Your work has changed outcomes. Your presence has saved lives!!!

We see you. We celebrate you. We thank you.💜

We are proud to share that our CEO, Jamelia Hand, was recently featured on The Catalyst podcast on Substack for an important conversation about behavioral health, organizational leadership, digital transformation, and the future of substance use treatment.

Jamelia brings more than two decades of cross-sector experience spanning direct clinical services, healthcare operations, government, compliance and regulation, pharmaceuticals, nonprofit leadership, and digital health. Through her leadership at Vantage Clinical Consulting, she continues helping organizations strengthen systems of care while navigating increasingly complex operational and regulatory environments.

Some of the topics discussed during the episode included:

• Her career journey across multiple sectors of behavioral healthcare

• The “secret shopper” approach she uses to evaluate treatment organizations before formal engagement

• The difference between the treatment business and the business of treatment, including compliance, workflow, reimbursement, and operational sustainability

• Why organizations continue to struggle with digital and AI adoption, and what leadership teams can do to improve implementation readiness

• Her widely followed “In the Field” LinkedIn reflections and why practical conversations from the field matter

The conversation also explored healthcare innovation, health equity, organizational resilience, and the importance of building systems that support both providers and the people they serve.

May is a big month for those of us in substance use & mental health…

➡️Mental Health Awareness Month.

➡️Treatment Court Month.

➡️Older Adult Mental Health Awareness Day.

➡️International Harm Reduction Day.

➡️National Nurses Week.

➡️National Hospital Week.

And the list goes on….

Each one shines a light on the people and systems working every day to make care more compassionate, accessible, and effective.

When I help providers launch new treatment services, one of my favorite parts is hitting the pavement, talking to local community based organizations, pharmacists, advocacy groups, even churches. Hosting open houses. Building relationships etc... Because community support isn’t automatic, it’s earned!

“Advocacy doesn’t always look like legislation. Sometimes, it looks like a conversation across the street.”
