Bone health is easy to overlook because, unlike muscle, you don’t really feel your bones getting stronger or weaker day to day. But bone density naturally changes with age, which makes the habits we build throughout life increasingly important.
Here are a few ways to support stronger, healthier bones:
1. Keep moving: Weight-bearing activities like walking, dancing, and climbing stairs encourage your bones to stay strong. Strength training also helps by placing healthy stress on your bones while building the muscles that support them.
2. Build and maintain muscle: Muscle and bone health are closely connected. Stronger muscles can improve balance, stability, and mobility, important pieces of reducing the risk of falls and fractures.
3. Make balance part of your routine: Good balance can help you stay steady on your feet. Practices like tai chi, yoga, and balance exercises can help support stability as you age.
4. Know your numbers. Bone health isn’t something you should have to guess about. Talk with your healthcare provider about your individual risk factors and whether a bone density screening is appropriate for you.
Bones help support strength, mobility, independence, and the ability to keep doing the things you love.
