Lower back pain is one of the most common complaints I hear from clients, but the area that hurts isn’t always the only area I’m paying attention to.
One place I frequently find significant tension is the glutes.
Sitting for long periods, working out, driving, being on your feet all day, or simply repeating the same movements can leave the glutes tight and overworked. Because the glutes, hips and pelvis all play a role in how we move, that tension can sometimes contribute to restricted movement and discomfort that’s felt in the lower back.
This is why I often work beyond the exact spot where a client says they hurt. Sometimes addressing the surrounding areas makes a noticeable difference in how the body moves and feels.
It’s also one of the reasons I teach clients simple ways to care for these areas between sessions. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing some of the recovery tools and techniques I recommend to my own clients for at-home maintenance.
Where you feel the pain isn’t always where the tension begins.
