Those little white flecks on the placenta are called vernix caseosa. Vernix is the creamy protective coating that covers your baby during pregnancy. It helps protect baby’s skin from constant exposure to amniotic fluid, provides antimicrobial benefits, and even helps during birth. As pregnancy progresses, some vernix naturally sheds into the amniotic fluid, which is why it can sometimes be found on the fetal side of the placenta after delivery.
